Sophie Wessex put a loving arm around Prince George as they exited Westminster Abbey following a poignant service for the late Queen Elizabeth II.
During the historic state funeral, young George, nine, was seen wiping away tears as he bid a farewell to his late “Gan Gan”.
George was joined his sister Princess Charlotte, seven, and other members of the Royal Family as part of the procession, following the Queen’s coffin from Westminster Hall to Westminster Abbey.
As the family arrived at their seats George appeared to get emotional and was seen wiping tears away from his face.
The moment was spotted by royal fans who were watching the funeral service on television, with some discussing the solemn occasion on social media.
At the end of the service, as the family made their way out of the Abbey, mum-of-two Sophie supported an emotional George.
Sophie herself has been seen looking emotional throughout the various memorial services held for Her Majesty the Queen following her death on 8 September – including at today’s funeral.
Sitting between her husband Prince Edward and first in line to the throne Prince William, the 57 year old could be seen wiping tears from her eyes.
After marrying the Queen’s youngest son back in 1999, Sophie struck up an exceptionally close relationship with Her Majesty and regularly made the 10-mile trip to visit the monarch at her home in Windsor.
What’s more, following the death of Prince Philip last year, Sophie is said to have become “a rock” for the Queen during what was an immense time of personal loss.
Speaking of the relationship, a royal source told The Mirror that she had been a "tremendous source of comfort to the Queen."
They added: "Sophie cherishes her relationship with the Queen and not only appreciates her guidance and wisdom throughout her own life, she is very protective of her."
Sophie also appears to have a crutch for her sister-in-law Princess Anne in the wake of the Queen’s death.
Sophie was seen placing her hand on the Princess Royal's back in a supportive gesture as the coffin arrived after a six-hour drive from Balmoral last week.
The Princess Royal escorted her mother’s coffin through Scotland and over to the UK – something she described as an “honour”.
"It has been an honour and a privilege to accompany her on her final journeys,” she said.
"I was fortunate to share the last 24 hours of my dearest Mother’s life. It has been an honour and a privilege to accompany her on her final journeys.
"Witnessing the love and respect shown by so many on these journeys has been both humbling and uplifting.”
