Strictlys Adam Thomas laughed at by famous brothers for wanting to do show

Adam Thomas talks about joining the Strictly line-up

Adam Thomas has revealed that his famous brothers laughed at him for wanting to compete in Strictly Come Dancing.

The actor became the first soap star to be confirmed for the 2023 edition of the BBC dance competition, having played Adam Barton in ITV’s Emmerdale and, more recently, reprising his role as Donte Charles in BBC’s Waterloo Road.

After sharing the news with his siblings – Coronation Street star Ryan and twin Scott, a former Love Island contestant – Adam admitted he was belittled for it.

“They just laughed,” he said. “They were like, ‘I don’t understand why you’d want to do a show when you cannot dance.’

“Again, that’s why we’re here, to learn how to dance. Everybody wants to see the progression through the series, and I’ll definitely give them that.”

But while his brothers may have poked fun, other family members have proven to be much more supportive.

He continued to OK! Magazine: “My kids are great dancers so they’ve been teaching me and showing me a few things, my son’s nine this week, Elsie’s five, so they’re going to be watching it and they’re huge fans of the show already.

“We’re going on this journey, but it’s not just us, it’s our family as well. They’ll be watching us every night, cheering us on, that’s what it’s about for me.”

Thomas also joked about being “confirmed” for the show in previous years – even when he wasn’t actually taking part.

“Every f**king year!” he jokingly added. “I’m like, take the hint, guys!

“… Because I’d been putting it out there for so many years, when they actually asked me to do it, I was like, ‘I don’t know if I want to do it now’. But I’m so happy that I did, because it’s one of those shows I’ve always wanted to do.

“It’s completely different to every other show I do, because this is a show where you get to learn how to dance. It’s a completely different experience and I’m enjoying it so far anyway. This lot are amazing, and the professional dancers. Everyone.”

Strictly Come Dancing returns to BBC One on Saturday at 6.35pm.
