Today, the Princess of Wales showed her support for England at the Rugby League World Cup quarter-final match.
Kate watched the men’s squad take on Papua New Guinea at Wigan, speaking to representatives from the tournament’s social impact programme and spending half time meeting the women’s team following their match against Canada.
It marks her first game since succeeding the Duke of Sussex as patron of the Rugby Football League. And, as ever, her style was a real powerplay.
The Princess wore one of her signature coats for the event, this time in a daring scarlet shade that stood out against the grey weather. She also carried a chic black umbrella with a curved handle to shield her from the rain.
Kate paired her outerwear with a burgundy turtleneck, pleated skirt, poppy pin, and heeled burgundy boots, with the deep red accessories creating a tonal ensemble with the brighter coat.
It seems colourblocking and high necklines are a favourite of the royal, as for her visit to Scarborough earlier this week she donned an all-camel outfit that has a lot of similarities.
While the coat resembles the Madalyn by Emilia Wickstead – a label she’s regularly spotted in – it appears to be a custom piece by Alexander McQueen that Kate has worn before.
The double breasted style features four buttons and sharp lapels, in a fit and flare shape that gives definition to the waist and offsets the angular, padded shoulders.
The Princess of Wales has long been a fan of bright red coats, sporting similar designs to this from the likes of Catherine Walker, Katherine Hooker, Erdem, and Reiss over the years.
In a previous outing of this bespoke McQueen number, comparisons were drawn between Kate and her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana, who was also pictured in ruby-hued coats multiple times.
Unfortunately, unless you’ve got a few grand going spare, the couture creation is probably way out of your price range. But that doesn’t mean you can’t emulate Kate’s (and Diana’s) pillar box outfit.
There are some great options on the high street as we move into winter, and although the colour is eyecatching, a neatly tailored style means a coat like this is surprisingly versatile.
Go for a double breasted piece to add intrigue to any outfit and, like the Princess, opt for a longer trench cut to provide coverage down to the calves. Not only will this keep you warmer, it also goes well with both boots and ankle-baring shoes alike.
