The strongest indicator of challenging economic times since the most recent interest rate rise was Margot Robbie in pale pink sequins, bugle beads, feathers and chantilly lace on the red carpet for the Golden Globes awards ceremony.
The “more is more” mermaid-style dress from Chanel offered the escapist excess of Depression-era Hollywood. When times get tough, designers offer expensive distractions.

The swirling, crystal-trimmed Gucci gowns worn by Michelle Williams (in cream), and Ozark’s Julia Garner (in pink) could have appeared in the 1935 Busby Berkeley movie Gold Diggers of 1935 or at a Paris Hilton party during the global financial crisis.
Award-winner Michelle Yeoh’s strapless gown with a pouf peplum from Armani glittered like a chandelier in a midnight blue sky, eclipsed by fellow trophy-hugger Angela Bassett’s halter-neck dress embellished with disco ball fever by designer Pamella Roland.
The metres of fabric gathered in the skirts of Lily James’ strapless red Versace gown, harked back to Christian Dior’s excessive New Look, which shocked those struggling in post-war France.
In past years the dopamine approach of The Crown’s Elizabeth Debicki and Anya Taylor-Joy, in bursts of pink and yellow from Dior, would have been enough to generate excitement, but in belt-tightening times it takes more to score a fashion high.
All that glitters isn’t always gold, as demonstrated by Heidi Klum in an embellished mini-dress with purple feathers and flesh fabric panels failing in their nude illusion mission.
Australian actor Milly Alcock from House of the Dragon took a stealth wealth approach in a black Givenchy dress with a plunging sweetheart neckline and just enough silver details to deliver that red carpet rush. Knives Out actor Ana de Armas also flirted with gothcore restraint in a strapless black Louis Vuitton dress with lattice embellishment, reminiscent of a medieval tunic.
Gothcore pin-up Jenna Ortega, from streaming hit Wednesday, lightened up in a sheer bronze gown from Gucci, only nodding to her dark side with bat wing sleeves and fabric crisscrossing her abdomen like a mummy’s bandages.
Men continued to emerge from the black tie background, where Brad Pitt, Elvis star Austin Butler and The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White took refuge. Eddie Redmayne’s brown Valentino suit with an oversized corsage and Donald Glover in a white Saint Laurent Karate Kid ensemble offered men opportunities to expand their evening wear portfolios.

As Glee and Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story creator Ryan Murphy, the winner of the Carol Burnett Award for achievement in television pointed out, presenter Billy Porter paved the way for the current crop of men in heels, skirts and diamond necklaces. Murphy said Porter “changed our perceptions by changing fashion.”
Designer Christian Siriano recreated the black velvet suit dress worn by Porter for the 2019 Oscars in fuchsia for the multi-hyphenate’s on-stage Golden Globes duties.
In a sleek powder blue Louis Vuitton suit with a cropped jacket and unique collar tie, adding a touch of sassy flight attendant style, The Banshees of Inisherin’s Barry Keoghan was only part of the change.
Presenter Jerrod Carmichael challenged Sarah Jessica Parker’s 12-outfit record at the 2000 MTV Awards, with a procession of modern men’s styles veering from Harry Styles glam to Michael B Jordan sexiness.
Like many Golden Globes’ guests, Carmichael dripped in jewels with studio apartment price tags. Once the diamonds are returned to Tiffany & Co and Cartier we can start thinking about bills stuck to the fridge, until the Academy Awards in March.
