I run a garden at a 5-star resort – the best starting point for beginners and the natural way to minimize pests | The Sun

A GARDENING expert at a five-star resort has shared his top tips for beginners looking for great growth without a lot of work.

The planting pro also revealed how the herb garden at the Four Seasons Hualalai is pest-free — even without pesticides.

The Hawaiian resort grows a variety of herbs and veggies on-site for use in the hotel's kitchens.

Among them are taro root, Thai basil, Japanese Eggplant, vanilla bean, kale, cherry tomatoes, wing beans, starfruit, calamansi, makrut lime, and rosemary, according to executive chef Richard Polhemus.

But while some of those plants may be for more advanced gardeners, Four Seasons Hualalai's landscape manager, John Palos, has suggestions for those just beginning to grow their own green space.

"Herbs are a good starting point," he told The U.S. Sun.

"Specific herbs that we suggest starting with while building out your garden include basil, rosemary, and dill."

And to cultivate healthier plants, he suggests taking a page out of their oasis' all-organic book.

"We’ve used lots of compost and mulch to build a healthy soil profile over time."

They stick to that all-natural ethos when it comes to banishing pests, too.

Palos said they don't use pesticides — but still have minimal to no pests by sticking to the natural route.

"I strongly believe in letting nature take its course with the environment and garden, allowing the soil to build up beneficial microorganisms and balancing itself," he said.
