I’m a big Yankee Candle fan – the best way to pick a scent doesn't involve sniffing the product, follow my trick instead | The Sun

A FORMER Yankee Candle worker has revealed a secret for selecting the best scent for your taste at the beloved chain.

While it seems like common sense to simply sniff the wax, the ex-employee insists that her method is better for picking your next favorite candle.

Candles add a lot to the aroma of life and Yankee Candles are a fan favorite with their strong and diverse array of scents.

However, some customers may wander into the store or aisle of their favorite shop without knowledge that could maximize their wax-induced experience.

The Sniff Test

The former Yankee Candle worker who let customers in on her secret method for picking a scent insists it's all about where you sniff.

"To get the best possible idea of what a jar candle smells like, sniff the inside of the lid, not the candle wax itself," @NebelEllustre said in a tweet.

The wax of the candle tends to carry its own aroma.

The lid apparently gives a better picture of what the candle will smell like when it burns inside your home.

Sign of the Times

Even candle-savvy shoppers may not know that different candles boast varying burn times.

TikToker and Yankee Candle employee @yankeecandleconnoisseur explained in a video that candles with a single wick made from paraffin wax have a burn time of approximately 110-115 hours.

Double-wick candles with a soy wax base burn about 60-90 hours, the worker said.

Also, the bottom of the candle can tell you the estimated burn time, according to Best Life.

Extend Your Candle's Life

If you trim your wick too low, don't fret.

"All you have to do is burn around the wick and you'd have a perfectly good candle," said TikToker and candle lover @CoolandClassy in a video.

Don't burn yourself doing this, but it's worth giving a go to make your candle last longer.

Return of the Candles

Yankee Candle accepts returns with minimal fuss.

"If you don't like your candle for any reason, you can go in and return it for cash if you have the receipt or you can exchange it jar for jar of the exact same size," @CoolandClassy wrote.

Go ahead and swap that scent you're not wild about for something you'll love. Yankee Candle doesn't mind.

Shop like it's your job.

The employee discount at Yankee Candle is apparently insane.

TikToker @CoolandClassy shared that store workers get 50percent off "anything that smells."

As the store sells mostly candles, this is a fun way of saying they make way for some mega candle deals.

Anything returned to the store, damaged or not, is reportedly available for employee purchase for 75percent off.

"I haven't even mentioned that once a month, corporate would send us stuff to review and you get free product," @CoolandClassy wrote.

Fire Risk

Twitter user and Yankee Candle employee @EtsyCCGG said: "Trim your wicks, use a topper to help keep the flame steady, 1st burn should melt ALL THE WAY to the edges or it will tunnel!"

They also recommend buying wax melts if you don't live in a home with lots of ample space, as they are flameless and work with just a warmer.

Know Your Warmers

While it is a somewhat common internet hack to use mug warmers to heat up candles, the experts advise against this.

"When I worked at Yankee Candle I was told to never suggest those to anyone as it can cause candles to shatter!!" Reddit user gonerstruce said.

Even candle warmers can pose a risk to candles.

"Candles are designed to withstand the heat of it burning all the way down and companies can't guarantee how their products will react with a candle warmer."
