HELL hath no fury like a woman scorned, as the popular saying goes – but actually you don't want to get on the wrong side of an angry husband out for revenge either.

Especially if these divorce horror stories are anything to go by.

From leaving the toilet seat up to refusing to walk the dog, there are many bizarre and seemingly 'minor' reasons why some marriages end up in divorce – and the reactions can be wild.

Here lawyer Paul Britton – who specialises in dealing with high net worth divorces – shares the wildest reasons he's heard for marriages hitting the skids, and the very dramatic revenge stories he's encountered…

'I've seen everything'

With his extensive experience in the industry, there's very little Paul hasn't seen – but that's not to say he doesn't come across an unforgettable and scandalous case from time to time.

Paul says: "I’ve seen everything when it comes to divorce.

"From the much more minor reasons like a client who finally had enough of her husband because he continued to leave the toilet seat up for six years, to another couple where the husband adopted a puppy but refused to ever take it for walks.

"The reality is in most of these cases, either one or both parties have given up on the relationship, but neither of them realise it at the time, however there are still cases that surprise me."

'A bitter pill to swallow'

In some cases, there is literally no warning.

Paul says: "We had one client who, one night was planning a romantic holiday for them and their spouse of 25 years to celebrate their children going off to university.

"However, the next day they received a divorce petition with no warning.

"Understandably, that was a bitter pill to swallow."

From love to loneliness

Paul adds: "Another client came to me and told me that after 37 years of marriage, she still loved her husband, but she had come to the realisation that she was asexual.

"All she wanted now was to buy her own property and have a studio where she could paint.

"I couldn’t help but feel sorry for her husband who had dedicated the best part of his entire life to her and was about to be left alone in his final years."

Doing the dirty

Paul says: "Another one of the most memorable cases was one where a married couple of 24 years had raised three children together and started a successful family business.

"The husband chose to offer an apprenticeship to a close friends’ daughter.

"One evening, the wife had gone home to cook dinner and left her laptop in the office.

"She went back to pick it up and caught her husband and their friends’ daughter going at it in the storeroom.

"While he told her he was just helping her to make a TikTok video, the wife wasn’t buying any of it and divorce soon followed."

A ticking time bomb

In another divorce case Paul handled the couple had been separated for over a decade – but hadn’t yet divorced or separated the finances.

Paul says: "The divorce was like a ticking time-bomb.

"As it went on and the arguments over several properties intensified, it seemed likely the wife would get the family matrimonial home out of the divorce.

"The husband was not happy, and decided he would take matters into his own hands.

"He cancelled the building insurance before proceeding to burning the family home to the ground – of course, shortly followed by a criminal conviction.

"It also amounted to financial misconduct for which the judge had no sympathy and the wife cleaned up."

Revenge is a dish best served cold… Or hot

In another incident, while on one of his frequent business trips, a husband discovered his wife was having an affair – and he got creative when opting for his revenge.

Paul says: "When they divorced, the wife received the family matrimonial home in the divorce financial settlement.

"The husband wasn’t best pleased with this result and started plotting his revenge.

"He wondered whether his ex-wife had changed the thermostat password in the house, which could be controlled in an app – which she had not.

"After finding this out he regularly remotely tampered with the thermostat settings.

"In the winter he turned off all the heating, and in the summer, he put the heat on max.

"Then, when his ex-wife was away, he would turn the air conditioning on max as well, and make it run 24/7 to present her with a pleasant surprise bill on her return home to Mayfair.

"Of course, I can’t advocate this as a legal course of action to get what you want out of your divorce."

'He defecated on her phone'

Like with many couples who have just about had enough of each other, one wife began to spend more and more time looking at her phone – with horrifying results.

Paul says: "On a romantic trip to Milan, the husband had enough.

"In the middle of Via della Spiga, Milan’s equivalent to Oxford Street in London, he snatched her phone from her hand, pull his trousers down and defecated on the phone.

"He said nothing, pulled his trousers up and walked off, leaving the phone, the faeces and his wife picking up the pieces.

"On return to England, papers were filed at court and the primary reason cited as the events in Milan.

"Definitely one I will never forget."

The blame game

Of course, there are often seemingly 'minor', underlying factors that can drive a marriage Paul says: "As with most relationships, the most vocal arguments take place over the tiniest of issues.

"Prior to the introduction of no-fault divorces in April 2022, the most common issues during divorce were who would start the divorce, and what grounds for divorce they would pick.

"Often it was going to be a matter of who is going to blame who.

"And most of the people who had committed adultery didn’t want to be labelled as an adulterer on the divorce petition."
