WE’VE all heard the saying that a dog often looks like their owner, but believe it or not, dog owners often take on the personality of their pup, sharing many of the same characteristics. 

In fact, research has shown that people are often drawn to certain breeds that share their personality traits. 

The UK Kennel Club recognises over two hundred pedigree dog breeds, each with their own strong and immediately recognisable identity. 

The choice of a dog breed is immensely personal, and the decision you make can say a lot about you as an individual. 

As a result, we spoke to well-known media veterinarian Pete Wedderburn, to get his thoughts on what your chosen pet says about you.

So if you’re a dog mum (or dad), get ready for some home truths about what your pooch reveals about your personality.

Labrador retriever

If your pup is a Labrador Retriever, Pete thinks that you are very relaxed when it comes to your home.

He explained that if you have this breed of dog: “You’re a rural dweller or you live in the comfortable suburbs. 

“You’re not over house proud, and you don’t mind the muddy footprints and dog hair that go hand in hand with this friendly, classic dog breed.”

French Bulldog

But if you’ve got a French Bulldog, according to Pete, you care a lot more about what people think.

Pete said: “You’re a fashion-conscious, social media aficionado, revelling in the adoring attention this quirky-looking breed attracts. 

“As a brachycephalic (flat-faced) breed, French Bulldogs are prone to a number of issues linked to their narrowed breathing passages (including heat stroke in the summer).

“As a result, your budget has been significantly affected by your breed choice, due to the high vet costs that are often involved in keeping them healthy.”

Cocker Spaniel

If you have a Cocker Spaniel running around your home, according to Pete, this means you like to keep on top of your appearance. 

Pete continued: “Cockers are the blonde (or brunette) bombshells of the dog world, with their long pendulous ears resembling a mane of lustrous hair. 

“You’re aware of the importance of looking good, and taking care of your appearance.

“Both you and your pet are likely to have top end hairdressers who ensure that the two of you are always looking your best.”

British Bulldog

According to this veterinarian, if you own a British Bulldog, you have a full wallet and are a traditional Briton.

He claimed: “You are a proud traditional Brit who loves this emblem of Englishness. You probably voted for Brexit. 

“You don’t have sensitive hearing: you don’t mind your pet’s continually noisy breathing. 

“Like other brachycephalic (flat faced) breed owners, you have a chunky budget available to pay for your pet’s health care costs, as they are more likely to fall ill than other breeds.”

Miniature Smooth Haired Dachshund

Dachshunds appear to be a very popular dog and Pete explains that if you have one, you are very image-aware.

Pete reinforced: “You’re a tidy person who loves the neatness and easy-to-manage nature of this adorable, carry-around breed. 

“You’re image-aware, and you love the extra compliments and attention that your dog attracts. 

“You’re financially sensible, and you have your pet insured, because you know that they are prone to slipped discs that can need eye wateringly expensive surgery.”

English Springer Spaniel

But if you’ve got a Springer Spaniel, you’re the complete opposite and are a lot more laid-back.

Pete explained: “You’re a no-frills, no-fuss countryside lover. 

“You’re a jeans or green welly person, wearing a Barbour jacket in winter. 

“You love long dog walks, and you are more dog-proud than house-proud. 

“For you, life is for doing and living, not sitting still looking pretty.”

Golden Retriever

It turns out that if you own a Golden Retriever, you are a good-looking, positive person.

Pete said: “Another good-looking blond(e) dog which attracts owners who appreciate their substantial size and larger than life personalities, with hearts as well as looks of gold. 

“You live in the suburbs or countryside, with regular walks through fields and woodland a key part of your routine.”

German Shepherd

According to Pete, if you own a German Shepherd, you are smart and very disciplined. 

He added: “You’re security conscious, aware that your chosen breed has a guard dog reputation (which you’ve discovered is camouflage for the gentle giant which most of this breed is.) 

“You are a smart, slightly formal person, living a disciplined life that links to the military background of the breed.”

Pug

But if your dog of choice is a Pug, it turns out that you care a lot more about what people think. 

Pete explained: “You’re a millennial or GenZ who was coaxed to choose this charming and comical breed by their social media stardom. 

“You’re a people-loving city dweller with deep pockets: you’ve learned that Pugs, like other brachycephalic (flat faced) breeds, are prone to breathing issues that can make visits to the vet more likely than with longer nosed dogs.”

Staffordshire Bull Terrier

Pete believes that a Staffordshire Bull Terrier is typically a man’s dog and says a lot about how you look.

He continued: “You’re more likely to be male, under thirty, and you’re in tune with contemporary urban fashion and culture. 

“Tattoos and muscles are on show. 

“Your dog expresses your no-nonsense, tough-looking but soft-on-the-inside attitude to life.”

Designer crossbreed dog

When it comes to designer crossbreed dogs, Pete thinks that you’re likely to be quite gullible if you have one. 

He added: “If you own a trendy-poo or a piggle-puggle (or some other fancifully named crossbreed dog), you're likely to be a well-meaning individual who is prone to falling for marketing tricks that include charging more money for mixed breed dogs with impressive sounding names.”

Mongrel, or mutt, or randomly cross-bred dog

And finally, if you are parent to a mongrel or mutt, this indicates to Pete that you are sensible and well-grounded. 

Pete concluded: “You are a well-balanced, sensible individual who appreciates that randomly bred dogs tend to be healthier, less expensive to run and happier than dogs that have been bred for quirky looks.”
