Express.co.uk spoke to Sarah Amelia Fogg, celebrity make-up artist and founder of Brows by Sarah, who shared her top tips on how women can maintain a youthful look using make-up. Sarah has a clientele made up of celebrities such as Olivia Attwood and England Lioness Chloe Kelly.

Sarah went on to recommend certain make-up products and how to use them. She said: “Firstly, I think it’s important that we embrace ageing.

“Lines and wrinkles are not necessarily something to hide, but rather an indication of ageing gracefully.

“However, it is perfectly understandable that some of us may prefer to cover them up and I find the best way is determined by how we prepare our skin before applying make-up.

“Ensure that your skin is exfoliated and moisturised, and I recommend using a silicone primer as a base which can help to soften wrinkles by basically filling in the wrinkles to allow your make-up to sit smoother.

“I also recommend applying using your fingers or a brush rather than a sponge to get the best coverage. Allow the primer a few minutes to set until you start applying any makeup. You may also find this means you can apply less foundation, offering a more natural ‘no-makeup’ look.”

Sarah revealed that there are some make-up mistakes people often make that can in fact make them look older. She explained: “Brows are the most common area I see where people make mistakes that age them.

“Neglecting your brows completely can make you look older, especially if you have sparse brows. Similarly, going too heavy on the product can also age you. If you like the defined look, avoid adding any colour to the end of your brow as overextending the tail can draw your face down and age you significantly.

“In general, you want to avoid adding too many products. I recommend starting at the tail and then working inwards. Doing this can help you work with the natural shape of your brow, keep it looking fluffy and help you avoid applying too much product.

“Applying too much product in general is a common mistake that can age you whether that’s with your brow products, eyeliner or foundation. In general, less is more.”

Another make-up product that can make one’s face look more youthful is blush. Sarah continued: “One of the best ways you can make yourself look younger is by using blush to add a natural youthful flush.

“To avoid adding too much and looking like you’ve just done a run, I recommend using a brush to lightly dust blush onto your cheek bones.”

The expert went on to list more mistakes that “we’re all aware of and yet all guilty of doing at times”, such as “not removing all of your makeup properly, and putting any makeup products onto dry skin”.

“I think another big make-up mistake is neglecting your lips or just applying lip balm or colour on a night out,” she said. “Hydration is really underrated when it comes to your lips but it’s really important to apply a hydrating lip balm every day. This can also aid with blood flow and help your lips look more youthful.

“If you want something that’s a little more low maintenance, semi-permanent lip blushing is a really popular form of semi-permanent makeup that I offer for achieving youthful looking lips that are fuller, defined, and enhanced with pigment.

“It can last anywhere from two to three years with top-ups – results will vary depending on how well you care for your lips, particularly whilst they’re healing.”

Sarah stressed that eyebrows are one of the most important features of the face to look after, in order to maintain a youthful look. She said that overplucking eyebrows should be completely avoided, saying: “On average, eyebrow hair grows quite slowly and will increase in length around 0.14 millimeters every day.

“However the amount of time it takes for your brows to grow back will depend on the level of trauma and inflammation the follicles have been subjected to by plucking. A healthy follicle will take around three to four weeks to become visible, and another four weeks until it has fully regrown.

“If you want to have fluffy brows by Christmas, I recommend using a brow regrowth serum to help improve the condition of the skin and follicles, as well as encourage growth. You could also opt for the ombré brow treatment which is semi-permanent and involves using a hand-held digital machine to airbrush tiny pigments into the skin, almost like a powder effect.

“The word ombré comes from having pigment stronger at the tail and softer at the bulb, but this technique is versatile and results can be bespoke for each client if the ombré effect isn’t to your taste.

“Overall, it creates a soft, shaded pencil look and is the best treatment to achieve fluffy brows that look natural if you don’t want to face Christmas without a full set of brows.”
