I’m an etiquette expert – the right way to eat everything from kebabs to chips & why there's a correct spot for ketchup | The Sun

HAVE you ever wondered what you would do if you had to eat a kebab in a formal setting?

Well, you no longer need to as etiquette expert Lucy Challenger reveals the proper conduct when it comes to eating your favourite grub.

Lucy Challenger, CEO and Founder of Polo & Tweed, a luxury domestic staff recruitment and training agency has always had a love for etiquette rules.

She reveals: "I was taught it as a child and have used it throughout my life, I always found it fascinating as it’s a way to embrace other cultures, make positive relationships formal or personal.'

"It allows you to be respectful to the people around, and the TikTok world seems to be fascinated," the etiquette expert adds.

Although some viewers on Lucy's TikTok account question why there's a need for all these rules, she tells Fabulous there's a very good reason.

She explains "People forget when they’re critical of etiquette that they probably do etiquette themselves without realising, when they’re queuing for a cash point or a bus.

All etiquette is social cues and behaviours we’ve been taught."

Speaking to Fabulous, the etiquette expert, from West Berkshire, England, reveals the proper etiquette to use when it comes to your top choice of takeaway.

Fish and chips

Who doesn't love a fish and chip takeaway on a Friday night?

It's the perfect carb-filled meal and the fact it's already wrapped up in paper means you don't have to bother with washing up after unless of course, you want to eat it the correct way.

The etiquette expert explains: "You should never eat it out of a paper basket and always use a plate."

It wouldn't be a proper fish and chips dinner without ketchup, but Lucy warns against drenching your dish in it.

"Squirt sauce at the top right section of the plate to dip in," recommends Lucy.

While you might be tempted to use your hand to dunk your chips into the sauce, the proper way entails using a knife and fork to make sure your chips fit neatly in your mouth.

Kebabs

Nothing makes the tummy happier than scoffing a kebab on the street after a night out on the town.

But it would be useful to know how to eat it in the company of more sophisticated guests too.

The etiquette expert revealed just how to do so in a recent TikTok video, and it all starts with getting on a plate in one piece.

Lucy first flips the polystyrene box upside down, she then opens it, puts a plate on top, and turns them both so her dinner stays in one piece while being transferred.

Of course, you must use a fork in your left hand and a knife in your right and take small, delicate pieces to eat with class.

Toby Carvery

As with all formal dining arrangements, you should never pick up anything on your roast dinner with your hands.

So that means no more filling your Yorkshire puddings with all the goods and stuffing them in says Lucy.

Although it's tempting to load your plate up with all the side trimmings, this is taboo.

The etiquette expert explains: "One should typically put smaller portions on the plate, especially in a buffet setting.

"A maximum of five portions of vegetables should be on your plate."

And if you're used to drowning your food in their signature gravy, then it's time to stop.

Lucy adds: "Gravy should typically be put on the meat and should not be soaking all of your food."

McDonald's

If you're planning to eat your McDonald's at home, the first step you should take is putting your drink in a proper glass, as Lucy demonstrates.

Always remove your food from their paper containers and place them on a plate.

To ensure you stick to the etiquette and not touch any food with your hands, the etiquette expert uses two spoons to remove the burger and place it on her plate.

Of course, she then uses a knife and fork to cut her burger and chips before tucking in.

Pizza

While you may be tempted to eat your pizza straight from the box, it's a hard no in the world of etiquette.

Transfer it to a plate and never use your hands to eat.

If you need sauce it must be transferred to the side of your late and the pizza lightly dipped in, never drizzled on top.

The only time it is socially acceptable to drizzle liquid on pizza is in the form of chili oil says the expert.
