According to reports, Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle’s Coronation attire is still being debated. The dress code could reportedly be changed to represent the less formal nature of the event. There is a huge possibility that they could break from the traditional style at the 1953 Coronation where almost all women wore tiaras.
The Coronation of King Charles will take place at Westminster Abbey on May 6, and planning for the momentous occasion is well underway.
As opposed to his mother’s coronation in 1953, the 74-year-old monarch is reported to favour a more subdued ceremony this time around, with less elaborate regalia.
But discussions about the Princess of Wales’s and the Duchess of Sussex’s outfits for the big day are still ongoing.
There have been rumours that all the royal women, including Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, might not don tiaras for the momentous event, with the exception, of course, for Queen Camilla.
Nearly all royal women donned tiaras to the most recent Coronation. Then-Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret even donned coronets (small crowns) at King George VI’s Coronation in 1937.
However, a royal jewellery blogger claims a daytime formal dress code could be established for the occasion in May, in which case hats would take the place of tiaras.
“I’m certainly hoping we’ll see Coronation tiaras, but it’s possible that Charles is following the example of some of his European counterparts, like the King of the Netherlands, and setting a daytime formal dress code for the event,” Lauren Kiehna told PEOPLE.
“That would mean that we could still see some grand jewels, like necklaces, brooches and earrings but no tiaras.

“I’ll be sad if that’s true but it may just be another part of the ‘de-formalising’ of the British royal world that has taken place over the last several decades.”
Queen Camilla is also going to defy convention and attend the Coronation wearing the Crown of Queen Mary.
For the first time in recent memory, the Queen Consort will don an old crown during the ceremony rather than a freshly made one.
This decision was likely made for sustainability reasons but also to avoid any controversy with the Koh-i-Noor diamond crown.
This was the crown worn by the late Queen Mother during King George VI’s Coronation.
However, the jewel is highly controversial due to commentators debating whether or not it was stolen from India.
It was expected that Queen Camilla would wear this crown because it was worn by the last Queen Consort at a similar ceremony, however, she has decided to wear Queen Mary’s crown instead.
This crown will also be a tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II at the historic ceremony next month.
This is because the crown has been modified to contain gems from her personal collection which the late Queen frequently wore as brooches.
The Crown of Queen Mary was taken out of the Tower of London earlier this year and replaced with the Cullinan III, IV, and V diamonds.
A few alterations were additionally made to the St. Edward’s Crown in preparation to crown the King.
On May 6, Camilla and Charles will be honoured at Westminster Abbey side by side in the first joint Coronation since 1936.
