Mom issues warning about choking hazard that isn't 'talked about much' and shares tips to reduce the risk | The Sun

AN ex-paramedic has shared a warning about a common food that many parents don't realize is a choking hazard.

In a recent TikTok, the former medical professional and mother outlined the risks of the food and shared advice on serving it safely.

TikToker Tiny Hearts (@tinyheartseducation) has more than 550,000 followers on the social video platform.

Her TikTok bio reads that she is "dedicating my life to teaching parents how to save their child."

The video opened showing an open, empty pair of hands, as overlaid text read: "This is a high risk choking food."

The hands then clapped together and a cucumber appeared resting on them.

The woman's hand came back into frame holding a small chunk of cucumber.

"Why?" she wrote. "Because they're hard."

The hand squeezed the cucumber chunk to show its unyielding nature.

The woman then dropped a slice of cucumber to show how slick it is, while overlaid text read: "They're slippery.'

She followed that up with tearing a chunk of cucumber apart, as text read: "They can break off into chunks."

The final shot of the video presented a solution to the choking hazards of cucumber.

The woman's hand reappeared holding short, thin slices of cucumber, and she wrote: "Cut them like this to help reduce the risk of choking."

The video caption helped to reinforce the message.

"Cucumbers aren’t talked about much when it comes to choking, so I wanted to shed some light so you feel more prepared," she wrote.

Commenters reacted well to the video, and many noted the good sense of the influencer's message.

One person wrote: "My son (11 months old at the time) choked on a piece of cucumber, cut to the 'BLW (baby led weaning) recommended size.' It was the worst experience of my life."

Another commenter said: "Yep. No one talks about them but my baby has choked on them twice. It actually got worse when he got more teeth because he'd bite off chunks."

Some commenters shared their own methods of serving cucumber, with one suggesting: "Use a potato peeler and they go so thin, it’s great."
