People are only just realising why microwaves windows are not see-through and have those black dots on the windows | The Sun

IT’S a kitchen appliance that most people use every day, but have you ever realised that most microwaves have non see-through windows with black dots?

People have just started to twig that this is the case – and it turns out it’s not just a strange coincidence.

Instead, they serve a scientific purpose that also helps keep us safe when we’re using the appliance.

In a recent TikTok video by Wolf Science, aka @Wolf_Science, explained that it’s required to stop micro waves penetrating the door.

Standing in front of his microwave, the science teacher explained: “In the quest to understand the science behind average everyday items, how come microwave ovens always have a mesh on their door?

“It’s because the manufacturer of those ovens wants to keep you safe.”

Wolf Science then went into the specifics of how it works.

He continued: “Micro waves have a wavelength about 12cm long.

“But those micro waves can’t penetrate through that grid – they actually get bounced back into the microwave to continue heating your food.

“Visible light has a smaller wave and it can penetrate that grid so you can watch your food cooking.”

MYSTERY SOLVED

The science fanatic went on to say that while microwaves are not the most dangerous type of radiation, it’s still good to practice caution.

He said: “You still don’t want to stand too close to your microwave but they are not going to hurt you as much as other forms of radiation.”

Wolf Science added another warning for those who regularly use their microwave.

He revealed: “The one downside or the one danger that microwaves do pose is if you put water in the microwave, you can heat it up to something called Superheated.

The manufacturer of those ovens wants to keep you safe

“Superheated water would want to boil, and it will boil instantaneously with this slightest little vibration, so you want to be really careful if you’re ever heating water to the boiling point in the microwave.”

Since he posted the video, people have been quick to respond and said they had no idea but had found the new information “fascinating”.
