Investing in some staple clothing items and shoes can take years off your age, according to one expert. Schellea from YouTube channel fabulous50s took to the sharing platform to reveal how women can shop their way to age defying beauty, as well as what women should never wear if they want to look younger.
In a video entitled ‘How To Look 10 Years Younger’, Schellea told her 1.4 million subscribers: “People ask me all the time, ‘What do I wear now that I’m over 50? I don’t want to dress too young and I definitely don’t want to look like mutton dressed as lamb’.
“And I think the main reason we’re all so confused is that marketers are not marketing to women our age group, so you’re either under 40 or over 70, and the gap between those ages is completely not thought about.”
This means that these women are often left with styles that may be outdated and too mature for them.
The expert explained: “Here’s something you can do right now.
“Go to Google and type in the name of a celebrity that has your body shape. Type her name in, and then write ‘street style’, and then click images.”
The key here is to pick a celebrity who shares your physique as opposed to just your favourite celebrity, as all body shapes suit different types of garments.
Schellea continued: “You’ll get a whole lot of images of that celebrity being filmed out in the street just wearing her casual clothes.
“And that’s what we’re trying to pick up on, what to wear as a casual outfit that is going to be appropriate for our age.”
This method will allow you to avoid forking out for a personal stylist, as your favourite celebs will have access to the best the industry has to offer.
“When you can see a celebrity with your body shape wearing something you think looks really great, you’ll know that it will look great on you.”
Schellea outlined Schellea a few key no-go’s for women over 50 when it comes to style.
According to the expert, while a bold printed blouse may swallow you up, a monochromatic blouse in one flattering colour may work wonders.
Schellea’s next tip was to be mindful of shoes.
Sandals that are totally flat – and where the strap goes across the widest part of the foot – can actually make a person look shorter and potentially stocky.
She explained: “Having those horizontal lines across your foot – if they’re thick – makes you look shorter and thicker.”
Instead, straps that point towards the toes are a better alternative for a more youthful, complementary look, according to Schellea.
Next, the expert recommended flattering your shape by playing with materials.
She explained: “If it’s tight on the bottom, you have something loose on the top.
“The same goes for if you’re wearing baggy bottoms or loose bottoms, you wear something tight on the top.”
Finally, Schellea suggested that women over 50 should invest in a pair of crisp, white trainers.
