The Scandinavian Sleep Method

This Scandinavian Sleep Method has been gaining popularity on social media, with couples hailing it as a "relationship saviour".

It involves having two separate duvets on the bed, giving both parties more freedom in their sleep. 

The method gets its name from being a popular sleeping style in the Scandinavian countries of Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. 

Couples may prefer it because it avoids a sleep divorce while allowing both of them autonomy over their own bedding.

Sounds tempting? Then you’ll be pleased to know there’s plenty of benefits to having your own duvet while co-sleeping with your beau. 

Chris Tattersall, Sleep Expert at bedding retailers Woolroom, tells Fabulous: “The most notable of these benefits is that the issue of your other-half ‘duvet hogging’ is instantly solved. 

“Likewise, should one of you wake up during the night, or at different times in the morning, then having separate duvets helps minimise the impact on disturbing your partner.

“For couples struggling to sleep, separate bedding can certainly help, supporting us to feel rested, energetic and focused”.

Get the Best Shared Night Sleep Ever

As sleeping can be very sensitive business, it may not be as simple as buying two duvets for you and your partner to have you catching Z’s.

Chris urged people to choose the right bedding, with a particular emphasis on staying away from synthetic materials like polyester and memory foam.

He says: “I always recommend wool as the filling, as it is a light, breathable and moisture transporting fibre, which is proven to keep you cool, even when it’s hot, and warm when the cooler temperatures move in. 

“Similarly, the material of your sleepwear is also significant. 

“Natural fibres like cotton, linen, or ultra-fine merino wool are light and breathable, whilst synthetic fibres are more likely to leave you feeling damp and uncomfortable.”

A recent study found that wool-filled duvets are more effective than feather, down or polyester at transporting moisture away from the body.

This effectiveness is what keeps you cool at night and can help deliver a 25% deeper, more regenerative sleep over an eight-hour period. 

If your partner is sleeping cool, calm and collected, it will stop you from being disturbed in the night, and vice versa.

Chris adds: “Having fresh air in your bedroom as you sleep will help to prevent you overheating or feeling stuffy in your sleep environment.

"So, I’d always recommend opening a window, as long as it isn’t too cold outside!”

Alternative to Scandinavian Method

If you’re not sold on having a different duvet to your partner, Chris assured that there’s still hope.

He advised getting a duvet that’s a size too big for your bed to reduce how often you have to tug it back to your side of the bed.
