Sydney’s radio powerhouses 2GB and KIIS have shed listeners in the latest ratings survey, but not enough to knock them from the top spots.

2GB* remains Sydney’s most listened-to radio station despite dipping 2.7 from 14.3 per cent to 11.6 per cent. KIIS followed suit, dropping two percentage points from 12.0 to 10.

SmoothFM experienced a similar drop, cementing the third spot but dropping 1.4 percentage points from 11.3 to 9.9.

The loss of market share for 2GB and KIIS was reflected across the week, with both stations shedding listeners in almost every slot.

Ben Fordham retains his title as the king of breakfast, but survey five sees his share drop from 18.1 per cent to 14.6, a loss of 3.5 percentage points, shedding 23,000 listeners on average (down to 119,000 from 142,000).

Kyle and Jackie O remain in second place, mirroring Fordham’s results with a loss of 3.2 per cent, down from 17.1 to 13.9 (down 21,000 to 113,000).

Kyle and Jackie O have also suffered a mixed bag in survey five, they remain in second spot, but their market share has dwindled.

Most concerning for 2GB would be the slide across the week. As well as dropping listeners in breakfast, the station registered dips in the morning (4.2), afternoon (1.9), drive (0.8), evenings (3.9) and on the weekend (2.2). KIIS was much the same, posting market losses in every slot, minus evenings, which rose just 0.1 per cent.

In response to questions regarding 2GB’s dip across the week from this masthead, Nine Radio head of content, Greg Byrnes said: “2GB is the number one station in Sydney. While individual survey data can bounce around a little, 2GB has recorded audience growth in four of the five surveys in 2023, showing a positive trend in our live and local strategy.”

Survey four saw The Ray Hadley Morning Show record a 17 per cent share, up 1.5 points; the result marking Hadley’s 150th consecutive ratings win, stretching back to Survey 4, 2004. Hadley maintained his winning streak in survey five despite a drop of 4.2 percentage points for a 12.9 per cent share, down 31,000 listeners to 119,000.

Elsewhere, ABC Sydney held steady from the previous survey, registering a 0.5 increase across the week, up to 6.1 per cent share from 5.6. In better news for the national broadcaster, youth programmer Triple J bumped its market share in the 25-39 age up 1.7 percentage points, from 10.8 to 12.5, making it second only to KIIS in that demographic.
