Room with a vroom: Airbnb host is renting out her GARAGE for £25 a night in bizarre listing

  • Host Catherine says the garage can be used as salon hire or for an overnight stay

An Airbnb host is renting out her garage for £25 a night – complete with a barber’s chair and leather sofa.

Accessed through a wooden fence-type door, the bargain overnight stay gets rave reviews – with an Airbnb rating of 4.81 from 27 guests.

But it is obviously supposed to harbour a vehicle as the walls are unclad wood and the roof appears to be made of plastic sheeting.

Host Catherine is renting out the pad, which is just one tube stop from Wembley Stadium in north London. The Airbnb superhost describes it as a ‘low cost bolthole’.

The garage is an outhouse situated in her the garden of her home, however she states that only females or couples are allowed to stay for security reasons as guests share facilities with her.

Visitors are offered a sleeping bag, fold up bed or air bed – as well as a halogen heater for the colder months.

Catherine describes the garage as ‘a pleasant place to stay for those who enjoy the simple way of life and the joys it brings.’

She says the space can either be used for barber or hair salon hire, or for someone looking for an overnight stay.

In a description of the space, Catherine says: ‘Humble simple living private guest cabin in my garden. One stop away from Wembley Stadium.

‘Ideal for visiting events or barber shop/hair salon hire. Peaceful. Simple living. Double parking available. High Street nearby with local amenities. bathroom and kitchen access.’

She says the space is a converted garage/cabin in her garden and is not in the main building of the house. However, guests will be able to access the main building for the use of the bathroom, kitchen and washing machine.

‘This is my home, and I will be in the main build at times in the day,’ she adds.

‘The room has been a functional barber shop, so is available to hire to a freelance barber, or it can be used as a guest room. It has a sofa, a TV will be provided, and I have a single fold up bed, or double air bed for guests to choose from.

‘It is an ideal simple low cost “bolt hole” to stay for anyone who is travelling on a budget and enjoys simple living.’

The listing says that access to the guest room is via the garden gate, and so therefore visitors do not need to enter the main house and can have private access.

Catherine adds: ‘Before considering booking (or not), and before writing to question me; please note: I am not hiring my guest room as a means to make a profit or run a business.

‘It is not a holiday home or “experience”. It is a convenient and low cost short term accommodation. The listing is available for hire as seen and as stated. It is a short term overnight stay.

She says the space, which comes with a barber’s chair, can either be used for barber or hair salon hire, or for someone looking for an overnight stay

‘Please do not write to me to challenge or question why I have chosen to not include or make adjustments to accommodate for those my home is not ideally suitable for.’

As a note to people seeking a more luxurious experience, Catherine makes it clear in her listing that those guests should alternative accommodation rather than booking with her.

‘My rental price and description are reflected in my fair and reasonable rental cost,’ Catherine says.

‘I am happy to answer genuine enquiries for genuine bookings for those who are happy with my guest room and listing exactly as it is.’

The host also said that guests are welcome to use her kitchen facilities – but not those offended by the cooking of meat, fish and dairy, adding: ‘My kitchen will not be suitable for anyone who is offended by my life choices and meal storage or preparations, which I will carry out as usual each day.’

And she added: ‘No male only guests will be accepted. Please respect my personal boundaries and decision on this matter.’

Amazingly the ‘bolthole’ received many positive reviews – although some were negative.

One said: ‘Catherine’s place is a nice cosy shed in the garden with all you need for a good night’s sleep. It reminded me of camping which I love to do and it is warm enough for February London weathers.’

While another said: ‘We loved staying at Catherine’s house, and recommend it 110%. Catherine is an amazing person with a very lovely way of thinking and insight on life.

‘Spending time at Catherine’s house felt like staying with family or friends (with a huge bonus, Veenie her dog).’

And another noted that the stay is exactly what it says on the tin, adding: ‘Catherine was a lovely host, very warm and accommodating and really made sure I was ok,’ one said.

‘This stay is exactly what it says on the tin, it is a place to rest your head, it is not a ‘stay’ or luxury location. I was in London for work and it was a perfect place to just rest my head for two nights.’

But one reviewer was particularly unhappy, saying: ‘Whilst reasonably priced, our experience was not pleasant.

‘Using the bathroom was uncomfortable as it is inside the house. You have to plan around the host ( Not great if someone had an emergency. Overall, access to the property was difficult due to not having a key (for understandable reasons, we imagine) this required lots of coordination with the host because she might not be at home.

‘If you want to return at some point in the day, you cannot enter since there is only one key.’
