Caravan and camping holidays were all the rage a few months ago, with Brits eager to avoid travelling abroad during the pandemic. Winter is here, but people are still keen to visit caravan parks in the UK. Are caravan parks closing for lockdown?

Due to rapidly increasing coronavirus cases, the Government has decided to place the UK into a national lockdown.

Wales is still in a firebreak, and England is going into lockdown from Thursday, November 5, until Wednesday, December 2.

Lockdown means staying at home, except for specific purposes.

The new lockdown rules involve staying at home and avoiding meeting people you don’t live with.

The Government is closing down non-essential businesses and people are encouraged to only leave their homes for essential activities.

This includes buying things like food or medicine from the shops that are open, going to school or work, fulfilling legal obligations, receiving medical care, and exercise.

Even when it comes to going to the supermarket, you should limit the number of trips you take.

Can you go on holiday during lockdown?

You cannot go on holiday during lockdown, whether that’s in the UK or abroad.

The rules state: “If you live in England, you cannot travel overseas or within the UK, unless for work, education or other legally permitted reasons, and you should look to reduce the number of journeys you make.”

You can only travel for a number of reasons, including:

  • Travelling to work where this cannot be done from home
  • Travelling to education and for caring responsibilities
  • To visit those in your support bubble – or your childcare bubble for childcare
  • Hospital, GP and other medical appointments or visits where you have had an accident or are concerned about your health
  • To buy goods or services from premises that are open, including essential retail
  • To spend time or exercise outdoors – this should be done locally wherever possible, but you can travel to do so if necessary (for example, to access an open space)
  • Attending the care and exercise of a pet, or veterinary services
  • Overnight stays and holidays away from primary residences will not be allowed

This means you can’t stay at a second home or caravan, hotel, or any other accommodation.

The rules rule out any holidays for citizens of England, including caravan holidays.

You also cannot stay with anyone you do not live with, unless you have formed a support bubble with this household.

Michael Gove said on The Andrew Marr Show on Sunday people must not travel abroad unless it is essential for work or other “critical reasons”.

He said: “Sadly, we’re saying that when it comes to international travel – of course if international travel is required for work or for other critical reasons, there are legitimate exemptions – but from Wednesday night, Thursday morning, our message is that people should stay home.”

Are caravan parks closing for lockdown?

Since all travel is prohibited under the new lockdown rules, caravan parks will be closing down.

The Caravan and Motorhome Club’s site explains: “Following the UK Government announcement which will place the whole of England into a countrywide lockdown, it is likely that the Club will have to temporarily close its network of campsites in England from 6pm on Wednesday, November 4 until the Government advises that we are able to reopen them (currently forecast for the beginning of December).

“The temporary closure also applies to our Certificated Locations and Affiliated Sites.”

The most recent update states that Club campsites will close from 6pm on Wednesday, November 4, until the beginning of December 2020.
