92 years ago (1931)

We revealed that ex-Labour PM Ramsay MacDonald and Tory leader Stanley Baldwin had agreed to lead a new National Government to tackle the “grave” economic crisis sparked by the Wall Street crash and the global depression.

Divisions in the cabinet had caused the collapse of Britain’s second Labour government and forced MacDonald to resign.

34 years ago (1989)

Nasa’s unmanned Voyager 2 spacecraft sent back the ever-first close-up pictures of Neptune and its satellite objects, including its largest moon Triton.

Composed of mainly gases and liquids, Neptune is more than two billion miles from Earth and is the most distant planet from us in our solar system.

22 years ago (2001)

American R’n’B singer and actress Aaliyah and several members of her entourage were killed when their twin-engine private plane crashed shortly after taking off from the Bahamas.

An inquiry found the Cessna 402 was overloaded. The star was about to launch a film career after appearing in the 2000 action film Romeo Must Die.
