Bella Hadid’s ‘no hair tie’ bun hack is confusing the internet

Fresh from wowing us all with a major hair transformation at the end of last year – in which she swapped her signature dark brunette shade for a honey blonde – Bella Hadid has got us all talking about her hair again. Except this time it’s a seemingly impossible-looking styling trick she’s pulled off.

In a short video posted to TikTok, the 26-year-old supermodel films herself effortlessly scooping up her long blonde lengths and wrapping them into a messy bun, her curtain fringe left down to frame her face. It’s the ultimate “off-duty model” look – but what’s got the internet really going wild is exactly how she did it, as she appears to not use any hair ties, tools or products to keep the ‘do in place.

“I’m genuinely confused as to how you just did that without a hair tie or pin,” one fan asked in the comments section.

“Wait how did she get her hair to stay,” another confused TikTok user wrote.

Luckily, others were quick to share how they think this great hair trick has been pulled off. “You can twist it inwards and tuck it in with other pieces of hair,” advised one.

“Her hair is dry because of the bleach so it doesn’t slip,” suggested another. They’re not wrong, actually. Taking naturally dark hair to a light blonde shade like Bella has done can seriously damage strands – this is because the process of bleaching lifts the hair's outer cuticle to allow the substance to fully penetrate. This dries hair out and can cause breakage.

It’s a result we’ve also seen recently with Kim Kardashian when she was platinum blonde, when a snap revealed that her natural hair in fact looked much shorter and thinner than her more polished Instagram snaps suggested.

“[This is] the reality of bleaching your hair,” hair extension specialist Andrew Thomas Jones said about Kim’s hair in an Instagram Reel. “You can use the most amazing products – and Kim has spoken about these products that she uses – but they can only go so far.”

If you’re thinking of making a dramatic hair colour change like this yourself, firstly it’s important to get advice from a professional hairdresser before going ahead. It’s also essential to take care of your tresses at home with repairing hair treatments – here are some that our testers love.
