A couple who split and filed for divorce got back together after three months apart – and now they’re happier than ever.
Alex Scanlon, 26, and Josh, 27, had quite the whirlwind relationship the first time around.
The pair started dating in April 2018 and tied the knot in December 2018 after finding out they were pregnant with their first child Harper, now three.
But by September 2020, the pair were struggling to see eye to eye and decided to call it quits.
Only, it seemed filing for divorce saved their relationship. After just three months, the couple got back together, and even got new rings to ‘start over’.
Alex and Josh first met by messaging over Facebook in early 2018.
Alex, a stay-at-home mum, from Dayton, Ohio, US, recalled: ‘I had crushed on Josh for ages on social media and practically stalked him on Facebook.
‘I saw he was at the same bar as me one night, so I tracked him down on the dance floor.’
The pair decided to get married after just two weeks of dating.
‘We were at a bar and just decided to go and get engagement rings,’ Alex said.
‘In December I just turned around and said, “let’s get married.”
‘Then a few weeks later we found out I was pregnant.
‘We managed to plan the wedding in about a day and just had it in my mother-in-law’s living room.
‘We didn’t even have rings just silicon bands and I couldn’t find a white dress in time that fit over my bump.’
The pair welcomed baby Harper in April 2019 but the adjustment to parenthood and marriage was a struggle.
‘I had bad postpartum depression, and we were just constantly in competition with each other over who did more,’ Alex said.
‘All this responsibility was new for both of us.
‘We just had this constant back-and-forth comparison. We were mourning our old lives.’
It was Alex who ultimately decided she’d had enough, and while Josh was ‘upset’ by it, he wasn’t surprised.
‘We both started dating but found we had the same issues,’ Alex said.
‘I was having arguments with my new partner, and he didn’t come to Thanksgiving because of it.
‘It made me think that no matter what we were arguing about, Josh would always show up.
‘I text him and said: “I really miss you and I think we have made a mistake.” He came over that night and moved back in.’
Josh said: ‘Alex had called me and her demeanour seemed different.
‘She was talking to me in a way that made me feel like she had missed me. And that she was having the same realisations as me.
‘When we actually decided to get back together, we took things slowly.’
The pair, who had spent £1,600 on their divorce at that point, called their lawyers to cancel proceedings and set about building their relationship back up again.
‘We focused less on sexual connection and more on emotional connection. For about two weeks we didn’t sleep together,’ says Josh.
‘We were focused on talking and bonding over the issues that we had and what we could do differently to insure we stay healthy and happy.’
On top of this new emotional effort they put into each other, the couple went for individual counselling as well as couple’s sessions to help them with their communication.
Then in July 2021, Alex fell pregnant again.
‘We were so excited to be expecting again and do over that newborn stage,’ Alex said.
‘Josh hadn’t even held a baby when we had Harper and I was just really critical of everything he did.’
Alex and Josh’s second daughter, Ophelia, arrived in April 2022, and they say their marriage is now ‘better than ever’.
Alex says: ‘Now we’re in a really good place and are loving our time with our newborn daughter.’
‘This time round he’s been learning and listening to podcasts and been a massive support.
‘We still have our arguments sometimes but when we go to bed, we apologise.
‘Hopefully we’ll renew our vows and have a bit more of a proper ceremony.’
Josh adds: ‘We are stronger together, and we have been doing great with managing all the stress this time versus when we decided to split.’
