When it comes to cold weather cover-ups, there’s no cosier option than a Teddy Bear coat.

Combining a glamorous, oversized silhouette with faux fur or fleece, it achieves the fashion holy grail of being chic and warm.

Originally designed by Italian label Max Mara, the teddy coat first hit the catwalk in 2013.

Now, to celebrate its tenth birthday, Max Mara has launched an anniversary collection of limited-edition styles, featuring a bedazzled version studded with rhinestones (yours for a cool £7,885).

Looking just as stylish as it did a decade ago, the teddy coat is a timeless wardrobe investment. Fortunately you needn’t break the bank to snuggle up with a designer-inspired look – the High Street has plenty of covetable and cuddly alternatives.

When shopping for a teddy coat, keep an eye on fabric density: a thick pile looks expensive, while thin fuzz comes off as cheap. If you opt for the original over-sized silhouette, pair with slim-fitting boots to balance the proportions.

Take a look at Mint Velvet’s plush fleece funnel neck, which instantly elevates a simple leather skirt and boots.

Ugg’s super fluffy number is a dead ringer for the Max Mara classic, but a tenth of the price. The camel colourway works beautifully with dark blue denim.

On the subject of colour, it’s worth choosing a teddy coat in a goes-with-everything shade to ensure you get plenty of wear out of it. Camel, black, cream and grey can all be worn with brights and neutrals.

Give a denim jumpsuit 1970s flair – and extra insulation – with Tu at Sainsbury’s teddy gilet, or add polish to low-key separates with H&M’s bomber style. Marks & Spencer’s knee-length teddy has enough va va voom to up the style credentials of leggings when you’re dashing to the gym.

If you’re already planning festive party looks, it’s worth considering a teddy to stave off the midnight chill. Anthropologie’s ice-blue jacket lends statement texture to a slinky slip dress.

But a teddy isn’t just for playtime; Zara’s pristine polar-bear coat (available in store) is just the ticket for updating workwear while keeping things smart.

Coat weather really is worth celebrating when you can look this chic.
