A thrifty mum has been sharing her tips to save money on energy bills on TikTok amid the predicted rise in costs this autumn and winter. In her last video, the Duchess of Thrift (@DuchessofThrift) detailed the clever way she is tackling drying clothes.

From October 1, household energy bills are set to soar as the energy price cap, the maximum energy companies can charge, rises to £3,549.

The tumble dryer is one of the most expensive, energy-guzzling utilities in the house. As such, many are finding ways to avoid using it.

The Duchess of Thrift explains when you dry your clothes can make a big difference.

She said: “I’m talking about my newly conscious efforts around saving money and drying the house out, and my obsession with watching the weather on these apps.”

The mum, who previously detailed how she is saving £50 a month on her electricity for a family of four, explains she never used to think about drying her clothes.

She said: “Before I was on autopilot because I didn’t worry about my energy bills because they weren’t extortionate, so I’d do a wash, dry it, and that was it. I’d put the heating on if need be.

“Now I’m being far more thrifty with my energy, so I’m not using my tumble dryer and I’m not using my heating, only an hour a day.

“So I’m watching the weather apps and I’m planning my laundry day. So the big things like towels and bedding, I’m timing them for when we have a sunny day.”

Tumble dryers cost around 67p per cycle, according to Uswitch. This amounts to £104.52 a year if you’re using the machine three times a week.

The content creator went on: “The weather apps are not 100 percent accurate but they are okay, they’re pretty good.

“We’ve got a lovely, sunny day today so obviously I’ve done a big load of towels that I’ve saved up because I know I can get them dry as it’s a nice day outside.

“In addition to that, I’ve cranked open all the windows in the house to keep a bit of airflow through.

“The room we sleep in, in particular, gets quite damp because of the condensation from our breath.

When will households start receiving money off energy bills?

“On days like today, make sure you keep them open to keep the airflow through your house.”

In summary, she says: “So, time it and get as much on the line as you can when its sunny to avoid using your tumble dryer, use your weather apps and use them wisely.”

One of her followers said: “I’m right there with you! Was just looking up the weather forecast and planning the bedsheet wash this week! Can’t believe how ‘thrifty’ I’m becoming!”

Another said: “I am trying so hard to cut my usage. I have all my windows open this morning and have lit the wood burner to dry my washing.”
