A man was left bewildered when he came home to find his sink filled with black grime – and plumbing aficionados online have warned it could be ‘raw sewage’.

Taking to Reddit, user u/Swimmerguy211 shared a photo of the porcelain basin covered in a disgusting substance, patterned in a circle around the drain.

The horrified poster, understood to be from the US, said he lives alone and was shocked to come back to the muck.

‘I came back to my sink today and it looks like this,’ he wrote in a plea for answers. ‘Any ideas of what it could be that caused this?’

However, it doesn’t look to be good news, as thousands weighed in on the issue.

‘If you didn’t leave the sink full of dirty water then the sewer backed up. That’s raw sewage,’ one replied.

‘Dude you’re not going to like this, but your sewer backed up,’ another supplied.

‘You probably have this in your shower too. Happened to me once in an apartment.

‘That’s nasty grime from the inside of your pipes and possibly some literal raw sewage mixed in.

‘It’s not even something you can fix either… the city has to fix that s**t. It probably happened to your neighbors too.’

However, many suggested that the issue is manageable.

‘It also could be gunk stuck in the pipes way down and gas builds up from the sewers,’ one answer read.

‘This happens to my sink sometimes. It’s bc the piping is s**t and it gets clogged with, what my plumber calls, fatty deposits.

‘From make up or hair products or lather from shaving etc. It’s annoying. It literally burps up and smells like farts.

‘I pour white vinegar down it every few weeks but once a year or so it’ll start this up again and we gotta take the pipes apart under the sink and snake it.’

Another also seconded using vinegar as a solution, but warned to monitor for signs of a deeper problem.

‘Vinegar is known to be helpful, but if you’re still snaking the line every year on top of treating it every few weeks, you have a bigger underlying issue,’ they said.

‘In general, I would start looking if your pipe is undersized, poorly pitched, being abused, or some combination of various factors, and start resolving that.

‘Also, I’d recommend going with a chemical treatment that is substantially better at the job than vinegar, and not harmful to your pipes in the long run like drano or liquid plumber, etc are.’
