I went as corpse bride for my engagement party – but not everyone was keen

Halloween is commonly seen as the season to celebrate all things spooky.

But Jody Morton, 43, decided to use the horror fuelled occasion to mark her engagement to Riy-Lee Williams instead.

And, she even dressed up as a dead bride for the bash.

Her teenage sweetheart popped the question in July after having got back together the year before, so Jody knew she had to celebrate in style.

Perfectly preened outfits and dainty decorations no more as Jody decorated the venue with the likes of tombstones to spiders.

However, not everyone was so on board with the deathly theme for the marking of the declaration of love.

In an exclusive interview with Daily Star, Jody shared her reasoning as to why she flipped the usual theme for an engagement party on its head.

The corpse bride explained: “I have always thought Halloween is a fun time of year, it was coming up to our anniversary.

“I just thought a Halloween theme is just a bit of an excuse for people to dress up and let their hair down.

“I had also been dying for Lauren Linford [makeup artist] to do my Halloween makeup for a few years!”

Jody had her makeup professionally done where she even had ‘Till Death’ scribbled on her chest with fake blood and prosthetics.

Despite her eagerness for the blood-curdling costume, some friends and family didn't want to dress up for the engagement party.

“Some loved the idea, but dressing up isn't for everyone so there were a few people that were not that keen", Jody admitted.

“But in the end most people went all out and it definitely added to the good vibes of the party.”

As Jody works in a bridal store, she was left inspired by the stunning dresses she sees on the daily.

She added: “I went as a dead bride. I actually work in bridal store Morgan Davies, so I am surrounded by beautiful wedding dresses, and veils all day.

“So again just another excuse to wear a wedding type dress. My veil was kindly gifted to me by Morgan Davies.”

But, her partner Riy-Lee was not as up for the corpse groom look and went as Batman instead.

“My partner went as Batman”, Jody shared.

“He's not a big party person, so we joked that if he got the bat signal he would be allowed to leave before the end of the night!”

“Standout costumes of the night have to be Holly Smyth as ‘Botched Barbie’, Adam Geraghty as ‘Freddie Mercury’ in drag from the ‘I Want To Break Free’ video, his outfit included the hoover.

“And Lauren Pegg as the clown from IT, Pennywise.

“We had light up letters spelling out ‘boo’, Halloween balloons, a smoke machine, a few spiders and tombstones around the place.

“[Also] a life sized skeleton on a table covered in sweets to go with the Halloween trick or treat theme, and some personalised sweetie bags with our name and the date on.”

By the sounds of it, Jody’s and Riy-Lee’s wedding is going to be on the more extravagant side as well – but she will be leaving the fake blood to one side this time.

Jody said: “We plan to get married on New Year's Eve 2024, with lots of fur, feathers, fireworks, food vans and bumper cars!”
