GREEN GUIDE: Interiors editor Nicole Gray challenges your home’s eco credentials

WHAT’S THE STORY?

On a mission to cut down on waste in the coffee industry, friends Laurence and Harrison Dark founded Odd Coffee Co, which sells surplus coffee in dented pods.

WHY SHOULD I BUY?

Nearly 100 million cups of coffee are consumed every day in the UK.

The industry creates 23 million tons of waste globally each year due to manufacturing processes, non-recyclable pods and surplus coffee grounds.

Annually, Nespresso alone sells around 14 billion coffee pods, which can only be recycled when sent to a Podback centre.

Odd Coffee Co purchases surplus coffee from roasters in the UK and repackages it in Nespresso-compatible ‘misshapen’ recyclable pods from various brands that deem them to be unsellable.

WHY SHOULDN’T I BUY?

There isn’t a reason. This is UK-sourced premium coffee at a fraction of the price, with eco-credentials.

THE EXTRA MILE

To date, Odd Coffee Co has rescued 3,500 kilos of coffee that would have otherwise gone to waste. Pods are delivered in FSC-certified 100 per cent recyclable cartons. The company’s ground coffee and coffee beans are also packaged in fully recyclable bags.
