We had high expectations for Kate Middleton’s Coronation beauty look, and we haven’t been left disappointed. First looks at the Princess of Wales arriving at Westminster Abbey show plenty of thoughtful and intricate detailing in her hair and beauty choices. In fact, there are so many details it’s likely you’ve missed a few.
Not to worry, we’re here to break down the exact meanings behind both her hairstyle and hair accessory choices, including how her bun is actually a top bridal trend for summer 2023 (thanks largely to Sofia Richie!) and why she’s wearing a headpiece instead of a tiara.
Kate floral headpiece
Reports from earlier this week suggested that Kate would opt for a floral headdress instead of a tiara, and this has proved to be partially true. For today’s historic occasion, Kate is wearing a 3D leaf embroidery headpiece by milliner Jess Collett and Alexander McQueen. It’s made from silver bullion, finished with silver thread work and features crystal detailing.
It’s believed Kate steered clear of a tiara out of respect for King Charles and Queen Camilla, who are the only Royals wearing ornate crowns during today's crowning ceremony. It’s also thought that she wanted something more “low-key” to match the paired-back event.
Kate and William’s daughter, Princess Charlotte, copies her mum with a similar style of headpiece made by the same designer.
Kate’s plaited bun
The Princess of Wales has traded her usual bouncy royal blow-dry for a detailed updo for the Coronation, and it looks amazing. Kate often wears a bun when she wears a hat to an official event, but we love how she’s upgraded this updo with the help of some plait detailing.
As ever, Kate is bang on trend with this look as plaited buns are already predicted by experts to be the “it” style for 2023 summer brides. This trend was largely started by Sofia Richie, who chose to wear a similar hairstyle for her wedding in France the other week. Kate’s version of it, however, features lots of volume at the roots and plenty of plait detailing across the mids and ends of her hair.
And on the subject of all that volume, hair expert Olia Cutz from London’sThe Extensionist saloncomments: “Kate’s up-do looks super thick and luscious, leading us to believe she has amazing invisible extensions which are completely naked to the eye. Not for length, but to thicken out her hair for this voluminous updo.”
