Following his mother’s death yesterday, September 8, Charles returned to London this afternoon as King. He was welcomed back to the capital by thousands of people gathered outside the gates of Buckingham Palace.

King Charles III was greeted like a celebrity outside Buckingham Palace this afternoon, as crowds waved at him and shook his hand.

Queen Camilla was by his side, looking radiant in a black dress.

Both Camilla and Charles wore black, as is the tradition when a member of the Royal Family has died.

Body language expert Judi James spoke to Express.co.uk about Charles’ reaction to the crowds, and what his facial expressions unveiled.

She said: “Charles has chosen this important moment to show his emotional vulnerability, greeting the crowd like a son in mourning rather than a king.

“This new air of vulnerability and shared grief, with the King even throwing both his hands up in the air to signal a sense of personal loss and emotional confusion clearly resonates with the crowd.”

Judi added that royal fans “are unused to seeing their monarchs perform anything other than a very stoic stiff upper lip”.

Although mourning the death of his mother, Charles was smiling while he spoke to the fans who stood at the front of the crowd, looking deeply touched by their presence and words.

Camilla followed her husband, also shaking the hands of those closest to the gates of Buckingham Palace.

The Queen Consort donned a black dress with three-quarter sleeves and accessorised with a pearl necklace and brooch.

This was the diamond knot brooch, which Camilla has worn before on various occasions.

The delicate knot brooch is studded with small diamonds.

Camilla’s pearl necklace was a four-stranded chain connected at the front with a brooch-like clasp.

It is one of the Queen Consort’s favourite necklaces and has been in her collection for years.

Camilla’s dress had a tight bodice and a slightly pleated skirt that billowed out, reaching her knees.

She paired this with sheer black tights and black kitten heels.

To complete the look, Camilla donned her Van Cleef & Arpels bracelet.

The Vintage Alhambra yellow-gold agate bracelet is for sale at Selfridges, priced at a whopping £3,950.

Describing the bracelet, which is made of 18ct gold and agate, Selfridges said: “Designed with the brand’s first iconic Alhambra design – a four-leaf clover (that’s practically overflowing with luck) – each agate motif is bordered with delicate beading and linked on a fine cable chain.

“Handcrafted in yellow-gold, it will sit perfectly alongside the matching necklace while doubling your luck in the process.”
