Man refuses to help dad financially, despite earning five times his salary

A man has revealed the reasoning behind his refusal to lend his dad money, despite the fact he earns five times his father’s salary.

Posting on Reddit seeking perspectives on the dilemma, the 31-year-old explained that, since he makes over $250,000 (£196,000) a year, his dad ‘constantly’ asks to borrow cash.

‘Most of the time I do it, because his asks are pretty small, but he has never had a vacation with me before,’ he wrote. ‘In the last two years, he has asked me to pay for his trips to have quality time with his other kids.’

Issues arose this year, however, when the man asked his father if he could ‘tag along’ on one of these family holidays.

The post read: ‘He said that I wouldn’t fit in and it’d be awkward. This time, the trip cost over $20,000 (£15,675), so I said, if I’m paying for this trip, I’m tagging along.

‘He got very annoyed and said that he had promised a father-son bonding experience for them. I asked him why he promised to do something he couldn’t afford, and he said” because I know you’ll pay for it.”’

At this, the man asked his dad why they had never had this bonding time when he was growing up, but his question went unanswered.

In response, the father shouted ‘are you going to do it or not?’ – and when his son told him no, he stormed out.

‘Now all of my family is saying that just because I was denied something, that doesn’t mean I should deny it to other people,’ continued the man’s post.

‘But maybe he shouldn’t’ve promised someone he’d do something when he couldn’t afford it?’

Responses were largely supportive of his decision not to lend the money, with one Redditor saying: ‘It is not your fault he is a deadbeat dad. It’s not your fault he made a promise that he can’t keep…

‘Cut off the flow of money. Spend your time, energy, and income on someone who treats you better. Consider spending time with your half-siblings without dad.’

‘That’s insane! You’re his son, not his personal trust fund,’ said another, while a third chimed in: ‘The truth is your father is a leech and uses you as his ATM.’

Some, however, felt differently.

One user said the man was ‘living like a king while letting others suffer,’ and another commented: ‘If you earn more than your parents it’s nice to give something back, or help them out if needed.’
