Meghan Markle left a wardrobe of clothes from her pre-Harry days in storage in Canada despite moving to Britain.
Prince Harry and Meghan married in May 2018 and it was assumed the couple would call the UK home.
The Queen gifted the couple Frogmore Cottage in Windsor as their marital home, with a refurbishment to the property costing the UK taxpayer £2.4 million.
However, it now appears Meghan may never have fully committed to living in Britain full-time.
It has now emerged that when the Duchess of Sussex left her home in Toronto where she had lived for seven years previously and where legal drama Suits was filmed, she left behind an entire wardrobe filled with her clothes.
The shocking revelation suggests the former actress had always intended to spend a great deal of time in Canada, even before the couple announced their intention to step back earlier this month.
Canada’s Entertainment Tonight TV channel reported that when Meghan moved to London in November 2017 to live with Prince Harry, initially at Kensington Palace’s Nottingham Cottage, she packed up her clothes and put them into storage in Toronto for use at a later date.
A significant proportion of the clothes are thought to have been left behind and have now been shipped to the home they have rented on Vancouver Island.
Some of the clothes Meghan left in Canada have been worn since her return over the Christmas period, including a black cashmere beanie, a parka by Soia & Kyo, a Barbour “Epler” coat and the “Bea” cable knit sweater from The Row.
ET Canada’s online editor Jamie Samhan wrote: “While it was known the Duchess put her furniture into storage, it was said at the time she took all her personal items with her.
“It also begs the question, did Meghan always plan on returning to North America in some capacity? Many have raised doubts around the step down of being senior royals and that both Prince Harry and Meghan had been planning this for some time.
“The two did give the full royal life a go, but perhaps they always considered having a Canadian abode.”
As part of royal life, an impressive array of designer clothing is part and parcel of the role.
Since she became a working royal, her working wardrobe has been financed by the Prince of Wales.
In the time since her wedding, Meghan has worn an estimated £847,132.49 worth of clothes according to Femail.
From the spring, Meghan and Harry will no longer receive any public funds for their wardrobes and therefore will be forced to pay for them themselves.
