A regular skincare routine can help to keep skin looking its best as we age, however you don’t necessarily need to spend hundreds of pounds on products. Dr Jaffer Khan, a plastic surgeon and Medical Director at Aesthetics International has over 26 years of experience in the world of dermatology and aesthetics.

He spoke to Express.co.uk about his top skincare tips and shared one of his favourite products to use daily for “healthy, glowing” skin.

Dr Jaffer explained: “Common signs of ageing have to do with external forces which are basically sunlight, the environment, and some internal forces like smoking and genetics.

“The common signs are obviously pigmentation, formation of fine blood vessels, wrinkling, as well as the thinning out of the skin which results in loss of elasticity and sagging.”

While he admits there are “many good products on the market”, sticking to “essentials” is the key to maintaining skin health.

Dr Jaffer recommends the use of “hydrating products” such as aloe vera, which can often be purchased in a gel form.

He explained: “I simply use pure aloe vera gel in the morning, afternoon, and evening.

“It’s a routine for me. Even before I go out, I use this because it gives the skin a healthy glow and over time, I have found it to be very beneficial.”

While aloe vera gel may be most widely known for soothing sunburn, its benefits stretch far beyond this.

Aloe vera has antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties which can help to boost healing, moisturise skin and prevent some signs of ageing.

Some research suggests that the gel can fade dark spots, such as those left behind by acne.

A 2018 study in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology found that when aloesin ( a derivative of aloe vera) was applied four times per day for a 15-day period, it was able to treat UV-induced and pst-acne hyperpigmentation.

While the price of aloe vera gel varies depending on the brand and where you buy it from, there are budget-friendly options available.

A 200ml tube of Aloe Pura Aloe Vera Skin Gel is available for just £5.99 from Superdrug, or The Body Shop offer their own 200ml Aloe Multi-use Soothing Gel for £16.00.

Along with aloe vera, Dr Jaffer also urges people to use sunscreen or sunblock every day, even during the winter months.

The ultraviolet rays from the sun penetrate into the skin where they then damage the elastic fibres which keep the skin firm, allowing wrinkles to develop.

Sunlight can also lead to other signs of ageing, such as age spots or “liver spots” on the hands, face, neck and other sun-exposed areas.

The number of wrinkles a person has, and how prominent they are, can often be linked with their lifetime sun exposure.

Therefore, Dr Jafer recommends investing in “a good quality sunblock”.

He said: “SPF 30 or better, and in some cases, even SPF 50 in very fair skin.

“Although we do need vitamin D from the sun, adequate protection in most cases and preventing direct exposure is useful.”
