An optical illusion has stirred up a storm among puzzle fans who are fiercely debating the correct answer on social media.

Optical illusions are a fun way to test both our eyes and brain, using colour, light and patterns to create images that can be deceptive and misleading – persuading us to second-guess what we’re truly seeing.

The latest is a classic puzzle shared by Crazy Illusions on Twitter, which asks if you can see three or four blocks in a simple illustration.

The account posts mind-bending optical illusions regularly to its 151,000 followers from around the world, and this one quite simply asks the viewer to point out exactly how many blocks they see, but nobody can agree.

This optical illusion – shared on Twitter account @crazyillusions – asks people to work out how many blocks they can see, while providing answers of ‘3’ and ‘4’

The picture – along with the caption: ‘Can you work out how many blocks there are?” – features two cartoon characters arguing over a pile of blocks in between them.

They both point at the pile, with one exclaiming the number ‘4’ while the other insists on the number ‘3.’

After spending time observing the image, bamboozled Twitter users took to the comments to share their answers – with many claiming that the real answer is inconclusive.

One baffled user said: ‘I’ve been looking at this for 30 mins now, and I still only see three blocks. Am I doing something wrong?’

Another commented: ‘If you look hard enough it’s definitely 3, great optical illusion.’

Many disputed this answer, with one person arguing: ‘I don’t understand how anyone can see 3 lol.’

Another agreed, saying: ‘There are 4 – if you see 3 there is something wrong with you.’

Others reported seeing both numbers, with one saying, ‘4, twice I’ve seen 3, but mostly 4,’ while another said, ‘Sometimes I see 4, sometimes 3. Depends on the angle I suppose.’

Bamboozled Twitter users rally in the comments to share their answers – with many claiming that the real answer is inconclusive

Some people became so perplexed looking at the image that their answer was neither “3” nor “4.”

One exclaimed, ‘I’m seeing double! Six blocks!’ while another said, ‘I counted 7!’

A commenter gave up in guessing altogether, jokingly suggesting: ‘There are no blocks, those are french fries.’

A final user had a total meltdown, saying: ‘Bro you gotta stop posting these, my mind won’t stop freaking. These keep me up at night. I don’t understand. I can never understand.’

The puzzle is a variation on the classic devil’s fork illusion, also known as an impossible object.

The impossible object is a 2D illustration that the brain instantly interprets as a 3D object.

In the case of the devil’s fork illusion it looks like a three pronged trident or two pillars depending on what way you look at it.

And so, it turns out that the puzzle asking if you can see three or four blocks is all a matter of perspective.

If you look down on it from above you will tend to see three, while viewing from the side will make you think you’re seeing four.

It comes after another optical illusion claims it can determine whether you are logical or intuitive based on what you see first in this picture.

The mind-binding image was shared by the US-based PsychologyLove100 TikTok account.

It shows an image that includes several elements – which ones do you see first when you look at it?

According to the social media account, what you first decipher in the overall picture determines whether you are an intuitive or a logical type of person and what your go-to thought process is.

Take a quick glance at the image to see what you notice first…

This mind-binding image shared by the US-based PsychologyLove100 TikTok account claims it can determine whether you are a logical or an intuitive person

‘If you’ve seen three bears first, you have an analytical mind, you’re good at analyzing facts and figures and have a logical approach,’ the video claims.

‘You don’t act on impulse. You prefer a step-by-step approach to things,’ it adds.

The videos goes on to explain that people who think logically tend to use conventions and regulations in order to organise their thought-process.

That also manifests itself in debate and arguments, where a logical person will have a more detail-oriented thought-process than others.

The video also explains that people who think analytically tend not to see a problem as a whole, but rather break it down in distinct concepts when tackling it to make it easier to solve.

That makes them particularly good at solving issues with a keen eye for detail.

However, people who saw mountains before bears are ‘intuitive thinkers,’ the video claims.

This means they tend to follow their instincts, which are usually right, when confronted with issues.

These people are also confident trusting their intuition, even when other people have contrary advice.

While they are usually right to follow their gut, this intuitive way of going about things also mean that they may sometime miss facts, and rely on their past experience to guide their decision making.

However, this trait doesn’t mean that intuitive people are indecisive, as they tend to be efficient at making decisions for themselves.

They tend to be smart and well-placed to assess situations as a whole, and are likely to think outside the box when solving problems.
