Prince Harry’s sentimental jewellery amid claims William ‘broke’ his necklace during row

In his new autobiography, Prince Harry recalls an alleged altercation between him and his older brother Prince William, following a tense argument between the pair.

According to an extract obtained by The Guardian, Harry, 38, claims his older brother, William, 40, physically attacked him in 2019, which resulted in Harry's necklace breaking.

Dad-of-two Harry writes in the book: "He grabbed me by the collar, ripping my necklace, and he knocked me to the floor."

The necklace in question is presumed to be the dog tag style necklace Harry is rarely seen without, and it is said to hold a very special meaning for the prince.

The necklace was fully visible during his appearance on The Me You Can’t See, with fans quickly spotting the item of jewellery as he took part in an interview.

The necklace consists of a black fabric chain and small silver pendant, which has a letter 'A' engraved onto it.

Though Harry never spoke about the necklace directly, many commentators assume that the A is for Archie – the name of Harry's eldest child with wife Meghan Markle, 41.

Mum-of-two Meghan, who also shares one year old daughter Lilibet with Harry, has previously worn a similar necklace with 'H' and 'A' engraved on it, which is presumed to pay tribute to her husband and son.

Harry's necklace isn't the only piece of jewellery he consistently wears, as the Duke of Sussex is never seen without his two bracelets. He has one beaded bracelet and a second which is a silver bangle with dark engravings on it.

Harry was first seen sporting the silver bangle back in 2001, when he attended a charity polo match with brother William, who wore a similar piece of jewellery.

It's thought that the prince got the bracelet during a trip to Africa in 1997, shortly after the tragic passing of his beloved mother Princess Diana.

Diana famously highlighted many issues in Africa, including landmines, and Prince Harry has continued to champion the same causes his mother cared about.

Speaking about his Africa trip, Harry told Town & Country magazine in 2021: “I first came in 1997, straight after my mum died. My dad told my brother and me to pack our bags — we were going to Africa to get away from it all.”

Along with his silver bangle, Harry also tends to sport a beaded bracelet, which does seem to change on certain occasions.

At formal events, Harry opts for a brown beaded-style bracelet, yet when he's off-duty he can be seen wearing brighter colours on his wrist.

At the beginning of his and Meghan's romance, they were both spotted wearing matching blue beaded bracelets, prompting rumours that they were dating.

It's unknown if the beaded bracelets have any significant meaning for Harry, as the prince has never discussed his jewellery choices publicly.

Harry's bombshell claim about the alleged altercation with Prince William is one of many revelations included in his soon-to-be released tell-all memoir, Spare.

The book, published by Penguin Round House, sees Harry open up about his life as a member of the Royal Family, including his relationship with his brother and dad, as well as the death of his mother Princess Diana.

Spare will be released on 10 January.
