Sailing into the weekend! Rowing fans put on a stylish display in colourful midi dresses and classic blazers as day four of the Henley Royal Regatta gets underway

The girls stole the show at Henley today as the fourth day of the Royal Regatta gets underway.

Photos show groups of girls stepping out in big numbers for a day out on the Thames – but despite a rule change in this year’s dress code, the ladies kept to tradition.

Last August it was announced that female rowing fans would be able to wear trousers to the Royal Regatta for the first time in its 182-year history.

The strict dress code was updated for the first time to allow women to wear trousers with a blazer or jacket.

But for the most part ladies decided to stick to tradition, opting for below-the-knee dresses and sandals – although some stylish guests opted for trainers instead.

This guest opted for a white dress with a floral print, and had her hair in a half-ponytail with a white fascinator. She carried a white handbag with a gold chain and white wedge espadrilles

This colourful trio also opted for trainers, while one stuck to sandals. They each carried block colour blazers to accessorise theur

Some of the ladies wore matching black blazers with white piping on the lapels and cuffs to withstand the breeze along the river

The ladies linked arms as they went on their way to watch the Royal Regatta on the River Thames

But for the most part ladies decided to stick to tradition, opting for below-the-knee dresses and sandals – although some stylish guests opted for trainers instead.

To keep away the chill from sitting on the River Thames all day, most guests carried brightly-coloured classic blazers to accessorise their outfits.

However, others broke from tradition and opted for cardigans to complement their outfits instead.

The regatta will see national clubs from up and down the country vying for glory on the emerald Thames in races scheduled until Sunday.

The popular sporting event, which was established in 1839, comes hand-in-hand with day of picnics and drinking. 

Each year thousands of visitors flock to Henley over the course of five days.

These guests kept their shoulders covered in a cardigan and blazer over the top of midi dresses, while pairing their outfits with white trainers

This rowing fan opted for a classic little black dress but added a splash of colour with a bright red jacket. Beaming for the camera she paired the look with tan cowboy boots

This gorgeous trio looked the picture of elegance in florals, with the guest in the centre pairing her dress with a yellow handbag

These couples were picture perfect in smart jackets and midi dresses, with the gentleman on the right opting for a wild-printed black shirt with grey trousers and tan shoes

The gentleman in this couple also opted for a bright red jacket with a beige shirt and beige trousers. His partner opted for a two-tone look of a light blue dress and a navy jacket

Teams compete in over 300 races of an international standard on the Thames, which can include Olympic rowers as well as crews new to the event.

This year’s Henley Royal Regatta is the first since 2019 after it was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid pandemic.

Prior to that it had run every single year since it was established, with exceptions during the World Wars.

Best friends! These gentlemen opted for matching red and white pinstripe shirts with red crested jackets. Both donning similar brown leather boots, the only difference in their outfits was the colour of their trousers

This couple looked chic as the lady paired a yellow flowing maxi skirt with a white top and a black blazer. For comfort, she opted for a pair of pink/nude trainers. Her partner looked smart in a white shirt and beige trousers with a multicoloured pinstriped blazer

As the rowers got ready to race, this guest picked up one of the athlete’s shoes for safekeeping

This couple looked ready for the day in a white dress with a blue and lilac print, matched with pink flip flops. The gentleman wore pink trousers with a white and blue pinstriped jacket

This rower concentrated hard as she got ready for the race, appearing to tighten an oar beforehand

She carried the oars along the decking to the boats where things were getting underway

This couple stood out from the crowd as the lady wore a white and blue paisley summer dress paired with white espadrilles. she carried a Navy and white pinstripe Jack Wills blazer with her. 

Competitors from all around the world will be competing at the regatta, with rowers from New Zealand, Australia and the USA all competing for silverware and glory on the river.

The most prestigious award at the regatta is the Grand Challenge Cup for Men’s Eights which has been awarded since the regatta was first staged. 

Each of the events is competed as a ‘knockout’ competition, with every race consisting of two crews racing up the Henley Course.

The course is just over a mile and runs from Temple Bridge towards Henley Bridge.
