Sainsbury’s defended its decision to change the packaging of beef mince even though it recently left some shoppers unhappy.

The supermarket replaced its old tubs with vacuum-packed alternatives, which are predicted to save 450 tonnes of plastic annually.

But despite reducing the amount of plastic by 55% per product, some customers were left unamused.

Back in March some shoppers took to Twitter to complain the packaging makes them feel “uncomfortable” – with some even comparing it to dog food.

One shopper complained: “Sainsbury's changed the packaging for their beef mince.

“I’m meant to be cooking spaghetti bolognese tonight and the thought of touching the new packaging is making me… really uncomfortable and I don’t like it.”

A second wrote: “Totally agree, looks like dog food. I have immediately stopped buying it.”

And a third said: “It’s also all squished together and ends up more lumpy in the pan.”

But while some were left displeased with the change, others embraced it with open arms as they appreciate the efforts to be more green.

One Twitter user applauded: “Good to see them trying to reduce plastic waste. Consumers need to get on board with it.”

Another said: “I’ve bought it and I’ve used it. The packaging has made absolutely no difference to the product but the planet benefits greatly. Well done Sainsbury’s.”

Now it seems Sainsbury’s responded to the questions and concerns, as staff placed leaflets next to the meat at some stores across the country.

The text reads: "New minced beef packaging – same quality product.

"So, our new packaging looks pretty different. But if it’s using 55% less plastic, saving over 450 tonnes per year, we say it’s a sight to behold."

Richard Crampton, Director of Fresh Food at Sainsbury's, said: "We know customers expect us to reduce plastic packaging and we are committed to making bold changes for our customers and the environment.

"This small change makes a big difference, more than halving the plastic used in our beef mince range and also reducing food waste.

"We are always listening to feedback and can see lots of our customers are already getting used to the change."
