Strictly's Claudia Winkleman makes sly dig at value of the pound

Now, Strictly Come Dancing isn’t usually the show for political commentary, but host Claudia Winkleman couldn’t resist a cheeky joke.

Week two of the glitzy BBC dance show brought all the energy with a dazzling quickstep from Richie Anderson and Giovanni Pernice, and the emotion as Ellie Simmonds and Nikita Kuzmin performed a stunning waltz.

And while the show is all about the dancing, there’s always room for a sly dig.

While teasing the performance of Tyler West and Dianne Buswell, presenter Claudia referenced the value of the pound dropping this week.

The pound fell to an all-time low following the newly-appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer’s ‘mini-budget’ which was unveiled on Friday (23 September).

Sharing that the presenter and his Aussie pro partner would be playing the roles of ‘bank robbers’ for their jive, Claudia had some advice on what currency they should be targeting.

‘My advice? Go for the dollar. Not the pound. Better value,’ she quipped.

Viewers at home were left in stitches, and equally as shocked that the joke aired on the primetime BBC One show.

‘Omg @ClaudiaWinkle that POUND joke cracked me up, hilarious!!!’, one viewer tweeted, followed by a series of cry laughing emoji.
