EXCLUSIVE: Trinity CineAsia has acquired Chinese fantasy epic Creation Of The Gods I: Kingdom Of Storms for multiple territories, including the UK, Ireland, France and Spain.
Highlight Entertainment Co is handling international sales on the film, the first installment in a planned trilogy, which opened in China in late July and became a big hit, grossing more than $400M and still running.
Directed by leading Chinese filmmaker Wu Ershan (Mojin: The Lost Legend), the film is based on Chinese classic ‘Investiture Of The Gods’ (Fengshen Bang) and tells the story of an epic battle between humans, immortals and monsters during the overthrow of King Zhou at the end of the Shang Dynasty.

The cast is headed by Kris Phillips, Li Xuejian, Huang Bo, Yu Shi, Chen Muchi and Naran. Lead producers on the film include Du Yang, Luo Shanshan, Wu Erhan and Yan Xuefeng.
The film is being released theatrically in the UK and Ireland on September 22, following its London premiere last week, attended by Kris Phillips and its Oscar-winning production and costume designer Tim Yip (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon).
Cedric Behrel, Trinity CineAsia co-founder and managing director, said: “Creation Of The Gods I: Kingdom Of Storms, is a project of unique ambition, scope and scale. It maintains the fantasy elements of the classic, while framing it in a tight narrative and grounded visual language which we think will resonate with European audiences.”
Behrel added that the acquisition marks a new step in Trinity CineAsia’s push to expand from distribution in English-speaking markets to also reach audiences in European territories. “We’re releasing in places where we think we can make a difference and do justice to the incredible labour of love that the director Wuershan, the producers and their highly talented and experienced team have put together against all odds and over many years.”
The first installment in the trilogy revolves around the collusion between King Zhou and his concubine, who is also a fox spirit, which incurs the wrath of heaven. A group of mystic sages send legendary general Jiang Ziya down from the Kunlun mountains with a scroll that has the power to enlist deities into heaven to sort out the human-made mess.
