When the PS3 and Xbox 360 were new consoles boasting a revolutionary graphical jump back in 2007, all eyes were on the original Assassin’s Creed.
It was an instant hit when it released in November of that year, allowing players to explore the Crusades and immerse themselves into the medieval cities of Jerusalem, Damascus and Acre.
Two years later, they followed it up with a sequel set in Renaissance Italy, exploding the potential of the franchise.
Since then, there have been 12 main instalments set across the globe from colonial America, to ancient Egypt, industrial-revolution London to pillaging Vikings in Scandinavia.
For years, the series was an action-adventure franchise, but after the technical catastrophe is Assassin’s Creed Unity in 2014 and the diminishing returns of Unity the following year, publishers at Ubisoft made a change.
Assassin’s Creed Origins turned the franchise into a full-blown RPG, but despite its success, it immediately divided the fanbase.
Two games later, Mirage is coming with the hopes of uniting them again with a game that is bringing the series back to its roots.
It comes ahead of Ubisoft Forward, which will officially reveal the game on September 10.
What is Assassin’s Creed Mirage about?
Information on the recently confirmed Assassin’s Creed Mirage remains limited, but now that Ubisoft is preparing to fully unveil the game at Ubisoft Forward, information is slipping through the cracks.
According to rumours, the game could be closely tied to Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, via the main protagonist.
People who played that Viking-era game will remember Basim Ibn Ishaq, one of the members of the Hidden Ones.
Mirage will reportedly follow him in his younger days when he was just a thief, following his journey as he joins the organisation and becomes an assassin.
One of the most exciting parts of a new instalment in the franchise is the location and time period, and reports suggest it will be in Baghdad during the years 870-860 BCE during the Anarchy of Samarra.
Many of these leaks came from YouTuber j0nathan, which was later backed up by video game journalist Jason Schreier.
He wrote on Twitter: “A person familiar tells me parts of this new Assassin's Creed leak are true (such as the name and the other stuff Bloomberg has already reported: spring 23, Baghdad, back to AC basics) and other parts are not ("multiple cities to explore").”
What is the gameplay is Assassins Creed Mirage like?
The game will reportedly be a return to basics, similar to the original from 2007.
Many of the RPG elements that have been introduced in Origins and Odyssey have apparently been scaled back, including no more dialogue options, no gender choice and no level system.
Eagle Vision will supposedly return, along with the ‘drone bird’ mechanics from newer games.
There will new animations with the gameplay being slightly different from Valhalla.
What is the release date of Assassin’s Creed Mirage?
Currently, there is no release date for the game, though one could be confirmed during Ubisoft Forward.
Some leaks have suggested that the game could see a spring 2023 release window, though this remains pure speculation.
The last game in the franchise, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, dropped back in 2020, so 2023 would be a likely time for a new chapter, given the wait.
