With energy bills about to rocket once again, we are all looking for ways to cut down on the amount of power we munch through. Bills will rise from October 1 and just in time for the dark nights ahead, one firm has a clever new idea that uses your Wi-Fi to switch on and off the lights as you move from room to room.

WiZ, which is owned by the same firm as Philips Hue, is launching a new range of SpaceSense lighting that can detect movement via tiny disturbances in the Wi-Fi signal that’s whizzing around your property.

As you walk into a room, these digital waves get moved around – a bit like when you wade into a swimming pool and create ripples.

The firm says that by measuring the small deviations in signal strength caused by those disturbances, its WiZ lights can determine if there is an object, or person, moving in the room.

Once it spots things changing, the lights will instantly switch on and as soon as things settle again the bulbs the turn off.

And don’t worry about the pet cat illuminating your house whilst you are tucked up in bed as the sensitivity can be changed to suit your needs.

The best part about this technology is that it doesn’t require any additional hardware with everything working via a smartphone app and the WiZ range of light bulbs.

Speaking about its new lights, Danny Lousberg, Head of Software Product Management of WiZ: “At WiZ, we are on a mission to make smart lighting more accessible and meaningful in daily life. A ground-breaking feature like SpaceSense is yet another major step in bringing this mission to life. For many users the need for extra hardware to enable motion detection in their system felt complex, expensive and cumbersome.

“Now, for the first time ever, SpaceSense takes those hurdles away, opening up automations and other smart lighting advanced benefits to everyone.”

The updated products and refreshed WiZ application are all launching later this month.

Along with lighting up the inside of your home, WiZ is also about to launch a new product that will brighten up the garden.

The new multicolor String Light can be switched to any colour in the rainbow and is fully waterproof so should survive the long British winter.

It’s out in October and costs £109.99.
