Disney+ rivals Netflix with a much cheaper way to stream TV in the UK

There’s a new way to stream endless hours of content and it makes bingeing on boxsets and catching up on movies a lot cheaper. Disney+ has just launched a new subscription tier which costs just £4.99 – that’s £3 less than the firm’s original standard charge of £7.99 per month.

Unlock unlimited access to the Disney Plus catalogue, including new movies as soon as they leave the cinema, to stream and download on your iPhone, Smart TV, iPad, Android, or browser!

It costs £4.99 for the standard plan with ads, £7.99 for the standard plan or £10.99 for the premium plan.

Contract length: Rolling one-month contract, cancel at any time | Parental controls: Yes | 4K Ultra HD: Yes, included | Stream on 4 devices simultaneously

An annual subscription drops the effective cost to £6.65 per month.

The annual standard plan costs £79.90 and you save 16% or if you want to pay for the premium plan, it will cost £109.90.

Contract length: 12-months | Parental controls: Yes | 4K Ultra HD: Yes, included | Stream on 4 devices simultaneously

It’s a good deal especially as there are no restrictions on what you can watch with the full catalogue of shows and movies available without paying the higher price.

So how has Disney+ made this possible? Well, there are three catches. Firstly you will have to watch adverts during your boxset binges with this lower tier not offering ad-free streaming.

It also doesn’t allow things to be viewed in 4K with only 1080p HD streams on offer via this plan. Finally, you can’t download things to phones and tablets to be taken on planes, trains or in the back of the car so, if that’s important to you, you might need to look at Disney’s other offerings.

Along with the new £4.99 Standard with Ads plan, there are now two further options to choose from.

The big Disney+ shakeup includes a Standard £7.99 plan which features advert-free streams, 1080p quality, full download compatibility and watching two streams at the same time on different devices.

If you want the very best option then there’s now a £10.99 Premium plan. This includes 4K streams, watching on four devices at once and including streams with Dolby Atmos audio.

Luke Bradley Jones, General Manager of Disney+ EMEA, said: “Today’s launch represents a significant milestone for Disney+ in the UK, offering customers the flexibility to select a plan that suits their needs and budget. All of our customers can enjoy a wide range collection of award-winning original TV series and blockbuster movies, including FX’s “The Bear,” “Elemental,” and “Coleen Rooney: The Real Wagatha Story,” along with fan favourites like Season 2 of Marvel Studios’ “Loki” and the latest series of “The Simpsons” and “Grey’s Anatomy.”

This latest move from Disney+ takes aim squarely at Netflix with the streaming giant also now offering a advert-packed plan for £4.99 per month. Where things differ is Netflix then charges £10.99 for its Standard option and a whopping £17.99 to watch in 4K via its Premium service.
