Elon Musk says he will ‘probably’ step down as Twitter CEO by the end of 2023

Elon Musk has said he will 'probably' step down as Twitter CEO this year, after taking over the platform in 2022.

In a speech to the World Government Summit in Dubai, Musk said: "I think I need to stabilise the organisation and just make sure it's in a financially healthy place.

"I'm guessing probably toward the end of this year would be good timing to find someone else to run the company."

Musk installed himself as Twitter CEO after buying the company for $44 billion last year.

Musk took to Twitter to joke about his potential replacement, sharing a photo of a Shibe Inu dog (i.e. 'doge') with the caption: "The new CEO of Twitter is amazing".

Musk added that the dog is 'so much better than the other guy' and that 'he is perfect for the job'.

Elon Musk's tenure as Twitter CEO has attracted ridicule over the last week as it emerged he threatened to sack engineers if they did not 'fix' engagement with his posts.

A 10 February report even claimed that Musk fired one engineer who said people were less interested in his tweets.

Musk reportedly said to the engineer: "This is ridiculous… I have more than 100 million followers, and I'm only getting tens of thousands of impressions.

"You're fired, you're fired."

Musk then ordered the creation of a special algorithm which prioritises showing his tweets on Twitter users' timelines. Twitter engineers reportedly pulled an all-nighter to ensure his posts are boosted over other users 'by a factor of 1000'.
