Elon Musk has unveiled a new Tesla robot, Optimus, named after the famed Transformers character Optimus Prime – but some fans are not impressed.
Continuing their work on the artificial intelligence robotics, billionaire Musk is aiming to have the second generation of his invention trialled by December 2023. It comes after tests of first generation Bumblebee in 2022.
Pop-culture fans will no doubt have noticed the Transformers references in the naming of the two robots, though it has left some fans of both Tesla and the Autobots riled up.

Video footage posted to X, formerly Twitter, showed the capabilities of the next generation of robotics, which included "improved balance" and "full-body control".
Users of the social media platform were less than impressed with the unveiling though, noting Transformers could fight, turn into cars and protect the world while Musk's robot has only just learned to bend its knees.
One user wrote: "Not quite on Transformers level. Pretty cool to enjoy this before they turn on us." Another added: "Wake me up when we get to Megatron. Cool robot tho."
Others simply pointed our to Musk who the real Optimus was with clips and photos of the Autobot leader.
However, some were more impressed than others, with podcaster Lex Fridman writing: "Really impressive progress. Congrats to the team!" Artificial intelligence has not excited everyone though.
Replies to the Musk announcement were filled with posts berating the artificial intelligence, including one user who posted a clip from the film I, Robot, where actor Will Smith can be seen shooting a CGI android.
Others believed the robot would be lacking in actual use, with one writing: "Its looking good but I think it has still a long way to go to be useful and not just a very expensive toy."
A quote tweet of Musk's announcement led some to believe the "best case scenario" is using them for "menial tasks", while the "worst case scenario" would be a Terminator-like extinction event.
