‘Godfather of AI’ says Snoop Dogg’s explanation of ‘scary’ tech is ‘bang on’

The 'godfather of AI' claims Snoop Dogg was "bang on" about the future of artificial intelligence when he said "these motherf***ers gonna start doing their own s**t" in a hilarious summary of the tech pioneer's warnings.

Earlier this year, Dr Geoffrey Hinton, whose research paved the way for AI systems like ChatGPT admitted he "regrets" his work as he quit his role at Google.

He warned of the "quite scary" dangers of rapidly advancing AI chatbots and claimed they could soon become "more intelligent than us" and be used by "bad actors".

As one of the world's most prominent pioneers of AI, Dr Hinton's warnings left many people concerned — and among them was Snoop Dogg.

The Drop It Like It's Hot rapper had the crowd roaring with laughter as he shared his reaction to AI during a panel held at Milken Institute's Global Conference in Beverly Hills, California, back in May.

He revealed AI chatbots remind him of the sci-fi movies he watched as a kid, telling the panel: “Well I got a motherf***ing AI right now that they did made for me.

"This n-word could talk to me. I'm like, ‘Man this thing can hold a real conversation? Like real for real?’ Like it's blowing my mind because I watched movies on this as a kid years ago."

The Doggfather himself then referenced Dr Hinton's warnings, saying: "When I see this s**t I'm like, ‘What is going on?’

"And I heard the dude, the old dude that created AI saying, ‘This is not safe, 'cause the AIs got their own minds, and these motherf***ers gonna start doing their own s**t, ’I'm like, ‘Are we in a f***ng movie right now, or what?’ The f*** man?"

Dr Hinton was asked whether Snoop Dogg's summary of his warnings was correct as he appeared at the Collision Conference last week.

Discussion host Nick Thompson described it as the "best summarisation" of Dr Hinton's critique of AI as he quoted the rapper's remarks and asked him: "Is that accurate, is that an accurate summarisation?"

Dr Hinton joked back: "They probably didn't have mothers."

After pausing to join the crowd in laughter, the host pressed on, asking: "But the rest of what Dr Dogg said is correct?"

"Bang on, yes," Dr Hinton responded.

Going on to explain what "doing their own s**t" means, Dr Hinton said while he still "respects" his peers who believe the future of AI will be "wonderful", he thinks we could be "in trouble" because it's very possible they may try to take control.

He said: "First I have to emphasize we're entering a period of huge uncertainty nobody really knows what's going to happen.

"The people whose opinion I respect have very different beliefs from me like Yann LeCun [also known as a Godfather of AI] thinks everything's going to be fine they're just going to help us it's all going to be wonderful.

"But I think we have to take seriously the possibility that if they get to be smarter than us, which seems quite likely, and they have goals of their own, which seems quite likely, they may well develop the goal of taking control and if they do that we're in trouble."
