Matt Hancock App to finally shut down as I’m A Celeb contestant moves to TikTok

A bizarre smartphone app created by (and named after) the reality TV contestant Matt Hancock is being shut down after five years.

The I'm A Celeb entrant has announced that the 'Matt Hancock MP' app will be deactivated as he plans to spend more time on TikTok.

Hancock first launched the app in 2018 when he was the UK's culture secretary in an attempt to keep his local constituents informed.

In a farewell post on the app, Hancock wrote: "It's time to bid a fond farewell to the 'iconic' Matt Hancock App – a platform that secure multiple exclusives, including my backing of Rishi Sunak for PM."

Hancock added: "While the news will come as a blow to those can't remember life before the app, fear not. For those left wondering where they can get my latest updates, I'll be keeping you posted on TikTok."

The Matt Hancock MP app apparently had more than 243,000 users last year, and according to The Register, this included many cheeky users (and journalists) impersonating politicians.

The app even had an uptick in users after Elon Musk bought Twitter, with a large number of people flocking to the app as it was seemingly a clone of the popular microblogging site.

Hancock's TikTok channel currently has 156,000 followers and he has garnered more than 1.2 million likes.

"There's at least one Donald Trump, a Boris, an Ed Balls… as well as a couple of Liz Trusses flagging up cheese import and pork product news," wrote Rebecca Hill in 2018.

Before his stint on reality TV, Matt Hancock was formerly Boris Johnson's Secretary of State for Health and Social Care during the coronavirus pandemic. He was forced to step down in 2021 after it emerged that he broke his own coronavirus restrictions during an affair with advisor Gina Coladangelo.

Hancock is still a sitting MP, but lost the Tory whip after it was announced he was taking part in I'm A Celeb. It is now rumoured that he might take part in a stint on Strictly Come Dancing.
