If you've ever sent a WhatsApp message you wanted to delete but missed the deadline, you'll know how frustrating and embarrassing an accidental text can be.

Whether you've sent something to the wrong person or written something you regret after a couple of drinks, WhatsApp's short 1-day window to delete messages from chats simply doesn't feel like enough.

Fortunately, Meta is taking action on this—by trialling an extended period of time to unsend messages.

Currently, WhatsApp users can 'unsend' messages, notifying contacts that they've been deleted, but the WhatsApp sleuths at WABetaInfo have highlighted a new addition to the app's beta programme which would extend this to 2 days and 12 hours.

WABetaInfo said: "The previous limit was 1 hour, 8 minutes, and 16 seconds. We just tried to delete a message sent yesterday and it worked! We can also confirm that the new time limit is really 2 days and 12 hours, the same one that was planned during the development of the feature."

This is just one of several new features included in the WhatsApp beta programme, which lets you try out experimental new features for the encrypted messaging app ahead of general release to the public.

WhatsApp is reportedly developing a 'stealth mode' for its beta programme, which enables users to hide their online status from friends and contacts.

It's still yet to be released to the public, but if you sign up to the beta programme you could be one of the first people to try it out.

All you have to do is open WhatsApp, tap the three dots for 'options', then head to 'More Options'.

There should be an option for 'Linked Devices'. Tap it and then look for information on the multi-device beta.

It's worth noting that the beta programme has limited numbers and is not always open to the public, so you may need to wait a few weeks to try again if there's no option available.
