Samsung Galaxy S24 set for big upgrade that will worry rivals

If you often try to talk to your phone using voice assistants like Siri or Google Assistant but are frustrated with how useless they can be, you might want to keep an eye on what Samsung has planned for its upcoming Galaxy S24 smartphones.

A new report from Sammobile claims Samsung is “going all in” on artificial intelligence (AI) for the new Galaxy S24 series of phones that are due for release in early 2024, with the devices said to include features from ChatGPT and Google Bard. Both are examples of new AI technology that can create written content and form full sentences based on a few keywords or a command from you, the user.

Global smartphone sales have stalled in recent years as annual updates to popular phones become less and less revolutionary. Samsung and others appear to be settling on AI as the new thing to tempt phone buyers to upgrade their handsets.

ChatGPT is currently mostly used via the web. It can automatically write emails and letters, or even poems and stories based on what you tell it to do. If you give it enough instruction, you can do some quite crazy things with the tech, which is trained automatically on what is called a large language model (LLM) to make it seem hyper intelligent – but really it’s just a computer program.

If this Galaxy S24 rumour turns out to be true, it could be a step forward for Samsung that would prove a rival feature to the photo editing smarts on the Google Pixel 8 Pro – a different but impressive use of AI, where you can erase people from photos or change how photos and videos look and sound.

It’s unclear what exactly Samsung plans on using ChatGPT or similar AI tech in its phones for, but it could be built into Samsung’s Bixby voice assistant, a brand and feature that is lagging behind the competition from Apple’s Siri and Google Assistant. It might be that Samsung uses ChatGPT behind the scenes to make Bixby smarter and have better conversations as a voice assistant, rather than the phone creating text based answers like ChatGPT currently spits out on the web.

With the Galaxy S24 rumoured to have either the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 or Samsung Exynos 2400 chipset, the AI power of the phone could be more than what Google can manage in the Pixel 8. We’ll find out soon enough, as we expect Samsung to announce the Galaxy S24, S24 Plus, and top of the range S24 Ultra in either January or February 2024.
