WhatsApp users have been left frustrated after indicating issues with sending messages on the popular messaging app.

The number of reports from people unable to get their messages out has spiked this morning according to Down Detector.

Initial reports appear to suggest that the problem is being experienced globally, and isn't isolated to just one country.

Service monitor Down Detector reports that as of 8:15am today (Tuesday, October 24) more than 12,000 people had reported problems with the popular messaging service.

The problem appears to have only just occurred, with a negligible number of complaints coming in at 7:59am.

People have been taking to Twitter to vent their frustrations and confirm with others that the service is in fact down.

One user wrote: "Actually I was blaming to my WiFi but actually I got to check on Twitter that WhatsApp is down."
