WhatsApp users could soon get the ability to create their own Sims-style avatars in the app and use them as stickers, profile pictures or even video call filters.
A future beta update to WhatsApp looks set to add customisable Bitmoji-style avatars, giving users a new way to present and express themselves in the app.
A screenshot obtained of the new feature shows that the WhatsApp team is working on a 'Create Your Avatar' page that allows users to make a personalised character.

The feature is currently under development and is set to be added to a future iteration of WhatsApp.
The WhatsApp sleuths at WABetaInfo said: "You may be able to use an avatar as a mask while placing video calls (but probably it will take a long time before being available to users) and it will also be possible to use your avatar as a sticker."
WABetaInfo has not confirmed when the new feature will be released, but it looks like you will be able to use your avatar as a sticker to send to contacts, similar to Facebook Messenger and Snapchat.
As it's part of the WhatsApp beta programme, the feature may never be fully released to the general public and is still currently under development.

However, given that Facebook Messenger and Instagram both allow you to use Bitmoji-style avatars and they're owned by the same company as WhatsApp (Meta), it stands to reason that WhatsApp could permanently gain the feature in its main app.
The WhatsApp beta is how developers at Meta test new features for the app before releasing them to the general public. It lets you try out nifty new features every week, some of which may otherwise never see the light of day.
