VIEWERS of 24 Hours in A&E have been left horrified by what they have labelled as the 'worst thing ever'.

The popular Channel 4 programme showing all matters of medical emergencies and dramas returned last night for its 30th season.

Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham is the basis for the show where viewers saw Kirsty arrive with a horrific compound fracture on her right leg.

Fans of the show were informed that Kirsty's foot was being held in place purely by a 'little bit of skin' and 'some ligament'.

As they rushed to deal with the gruesome injury, a nurse could be heard explaining: "She's going to need some ketamine."

Nurse Lou Davis, a resident nurse with over 32 years experience in the department, was quick to quip that it was one of the 'grimmest' injuries she had ever seen.

Lou admitted that she 'didn't like wobbly bones' and joked she wasn't sure how she ended up working in A+E.

The veteran nurse opened up about the injury, saying: "It was horrific. We'd received a telephone call to say someone was coming in with a compound fracture so when she came through the door and her foot was hanging off I was just shocked because usually you get some sense of what you're going to be confronted by.

"The fact that she kept her foot is incredible. When they put it back in I thought I was going to vomit… the bit they didn't show is graphic. When you look at Kirsty you're not looking at just the guy that put her foot back, you're looking at the probably 200 people who saved her foot, and she's got to be at the front of that as she could have said 'take the bloody thing off'.
