BAFTAs suffered an awkward moment when Carey Mulligan was incorrectly named Best Supporting Actress.

The award was meant to go to Kerry Condon for her work in BATFA-nominated hit The Banshees Of Inisherin, but deaf actor Troy Kotsur accidentally announced Carey as the winner after his translator sent the wrong message.

The winner was first announced as Carey for her work in film She Said before Troy's translator corrected the mistake and ensured Kerry rightly given the award.

But the name blunder was not aired by the BBC, who televised the Sunday (19th Feb) award ceremony slightly later.

After her win, Kerry said: “Thank you Martin [McDonagh] for this part, and thank you for all the parts you gave me throughout my career. You make me so proud to be an Irish woman.”

She also thanked her "amazing cast" as well as her family, and her horses and dogs.

The show's host Richard E. Grant joked later that he had a defibrillator for Carey should she need it.

A similar mistake happened back in 2017 during the prestigious Oscars awards where Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty wrongly announced La La Land, starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone as the winner for Best Picture, when the award was meant for Moonlight.

Shortly after Kerry's win, fellow Banshees star Barry Keoghan won Best Supporting Actor and the 30-year-old Irish actor sheepishly told the audience that he "should have planned this, really," before thanking his co-stars and Ireland.

He also dedicated the award to children from the area he comes from.

A host of huge names were in attendance at the ceremony, including royals Kate Middleton, who wore a stunning white one-shoulder gown with black gloves and Prince William, who arrived in a pre-worn black velvet tuxedo.
